Recapping the academic seminar “Jade and Royalty” conducted by Prof. TANG Chung on 20 November 2015.

Prof Tang started the lecture with the origin of jade; he then further discussed its relations with the emergence of royalty and the formation of state. The earliest jade could be traced to the Aurignacian culture in Europe 30,000 years ago. Jade ornaments were found in graves in Xinglongwa site dated back around 8000 years ago. Through the study of jade from Liangzhu culture, Prof Tang and his research team explore the relationships between jade craftsmanship, society and spirituality. Aristocrats and the royal family controlled the raw material and production techniques of quality jade articles and monopolised the creation of divine symbols. The degree of sophistication of jade not only reflected its value but also represented the ranking and hierarchy of aristocrats and royal family members, who were the owners or consumers of jade articles.

Recapping the academic seminar “GIS在史學之人文、地理研究中的新視角 — 以《史記》、《漢書》、《三國志》研究與南海島嶼名考證為例” conducted by Prof. XU Panqing on 20 November 2015.

Prof. XU Panqing of Sanjiang University was invited by the Department and the Research Centre for Humanities Computing, Research Institute for the Humanities to present a lecture. During the lecture, he shared with faculty members and students his research on Chinese geography and historical GIS.
