Dr. SIU Kam Wah gave a history database reference tool workshop and an undergraduate programme admission talk to 29 students and a teacher of Higher Diploma Program (Applied History Studies) of the School of Continuing and Professional Studies, CUHK, at the University Library on 24 September 2019.
Dr. SIU Kam Wah offered an academic talk on “Urban Life and Culture in Song China as Seen from the Painting Along the River during the Qingming Festival” and an undergraduate programme admission talk to more than two hundred students and teachers at St. Paul’s Co-educational College on 8 October 2019.
Prof. HE Xi elaborated on how to combine fieldwork experience with history materials in research in three aspects. First, in the fieldwork, we need to concentrate on what writing materials do not tell us. Prof. HE articulated the “danger” of writings, such as missing the description of people’s daily life in ancient literatures. Researchers are required to fill in the missing pieces by doing fieldwork, questioning the processes and then tracing back to the old time. Second, we should pay attention to how the standardisation of literature affects the recorded content. Prof. HE summarised the “minimal tradition” presented in Ouyang Xiu’s genealogy and explained how ceremonies of the nobility spread to the common people. Third, we have to learn how to interpret literature in a fieldwork approach, which requires solid fieldwork experience, detailed literature review and vivid imagination. By continuously deepening the understanding of fieldwork and literature, the stories that we tell will be more enriching and interesting, and be restored closer to the historical scene.
