Briefing Session for Summer Internship Programme 2016
The Department of History has been organising the Summer Internship Programme for its students since 2000. For the current year, 15 partner organisations in Hong Kong, the Mainland and Taiwan, which include government departments, publishers and museums, offer over 30 intern positions to History full-time undergraduate and postgraduate students (including the MA Programme in Comparative and Public History). Personalia
Our welcome to Prof. François GIPOULOUX. Prof. GIPOULOUX is visiting the Department between 22 February and 20 March 2016 to have academic exchange with faculty members and students. He will deliver a Public Lecture on History and Business in China 2015–16 titled “Trading Networks, Economic Institutions and Capitalism in China’s Longue Durée Perspective” on 29 February 2016.
Prof. GIPOULOUX received his Doctorate from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (Graduate School for Advanced Studies in Social Sciences) in 1981 and its Habilitation à diriger des recherches in 1997. He teaches at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales and is the Emeritus Research Director, National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS, France). He is a specialist in Chinese economics with a professional experience in China, Hong Kong and Japan of almost 20 years.
Miss WONG Lai Ming, Mavis, will leave on 1 March 2016. We would like to extend our appreciation to Mavis for her contributions to the Graduate Division of the Department of History.
Academic Activities
Recapping the Public Lectures on History and Business in China 2015–16 “Between Financial-Economic Security and National Health: Discourse on Native Opium in Late Qing China, 1833–1905” delivered by Prof. LIN Man-houng of Academia Sinica at the Hong Kong Central Library on 23 February 2016
Throughout the period of 1833–1905, financial-economic security overrode national health as the main concern of late Qing discourse on native opium. Prof. LIN started the lecture on how these two obsessions were woven in their narration based upon scholar-officials, Westerners, and some common people’s discussion of native opium.
Recapping the lecture on “Responses to Challenges of Climate Disasters: A Comparison of Hong Kong’s and Taiwan’s Most Severe Typhoons” delivered by Prof. LIU Ts’ui-jung of Academia Sinica and Prof. HO Pui Yin on 24 February 2016
Co-organised by the Department of History and the Leung Po Chuen Research Centre for Hong Kong History and Humanities, the lecture on “Responses to Challenges of Climate Disasters: A Comparison of Hong Kong’s and Taiwan’s Most Severe Typhoons” was held on 24 February 2016. Prof. LIU and Prof. HO shared their professional knowledge and discussed how humans responded to the challenges of climate disasters with a comparison of Hong Kong’s and Taiwan’s most severe typhoons. Prof. HSIUNG Peng-chen, Director of the Research Institute for the Humanities, acted as the moderator.
