Throughout the period of 1833–1905, financial-economic security overrode national health as the main concern of late Qing discourse on native opium. Prof. LIN started the lecture on how these two obsessions were woven in their narration based upon scholar-officials, Westerners, and some common people’s discussion of native opium.
Co-organised by the Department of History and the Leung Po Chuen Research Centre for Hong Kong History and Humanities, the lecture on “Responses to Challenges of Climate Disasters: A Comparison of Hong Kong’s and Taiwan’s Most Severe Typhoons” was held on 24 February 2016. Prof. LIU and Prof. HO shared their professional knowledge and discussed how humans responded to the challenges of climate disasters with a comparison of Hong Kong’s and Taiwan’s most severe typhoons. Prof. HSIUNG Peng-chen, Director of the Research Institute for the Humanities, acted as the moderator.
Four distinguished scholars will give lectures on history and business in China and related topics at the Lecture Theatre, Ground Floor, Hong Kong Central Library, 66 Causeway Road, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong in February and March 2016.
