Congratulations to our Teaching Staff on Success of Receiving Project Grant from Education Bureau
We would like to extend our congratulations to Prof. CHEUNG Sui Wai and Prof. Ian MORLEY for receiving funding support from the Gifted Education Fund of Education Bureau to provide off-school advanced learning programme for gifted students at secondary levels, project title “Engaging with Urban History to Promote Deep Learning: Thinking, Seeing, and Reading the Built Environment in Hong Kong and Beyond” [Details …].
Academic Activities
Recapping the Academic Seminar “World History Roundtable: ‘What is World History?’” conducted on 26 January 2022
Co-convened by Prof. Stuart MCMANUS and Prof. James MORTON, the Centre for Comparative and Public History, Department of History organised the “World History Seminar Series” in Term 2 of 2021-22. Moderated by Prof. Ian MORLEY, the seminar series began with a roundtable discussing the theme “What is World History?” on 26 January 2022. Featuring historians, legal historians and legal scholars who are experts in their fields, the roundtable offered the opportunity to develop a deeper knowledge of world history approaches to various issues. Prof. Gregory GORDON (CUHK Law) presented an overview of the history of international criminal law through the lens of Michael FOUCAULT’s philosophy. Next, Prof. Stuart MCMANUS explained world history and transnational historical approaches. Prof. Ryan MITCHELL (CUHK Law) offered insights into the intersection of Chinese history and international law. Prof. James MORTON discussed various aspects of world history in relation to his research on the Byzantine Empire and Medieval Europe. Prof. PUK Wing Kin gave an overview of how his project on the sixteenth-century Korean War seeks to transcend the modern nation-state assumption. Prof. Christopher ROBERTS (CUHK Law) discussed his research on the evolution of public order legality within the British Empire. Lastly, Prof. Noah SHUSTERMAN gave his insights on the relevance of world history to his research on Early Modern Europe. The roundtable concluded by reflecting on the teaching of world history in Hong Kong.
