Academic Activities

Recapping the Academic Seminar “漢代時期東亞知識的傳播:以《論語》為中心” conducted by Prof. KIM Kyung-Ho on 21 January 2019

Prof. KIM Kyung-ho from the Academy of East Asian Studies, Sungkyunkwan University was invited by the Department to deliver a lecture entitled “Knowledge Dissemination in East Asia during the Han Era: A Case Study of the Analects” (漢代時期東亞知識的傳播:以《論語》為中心) on 21 January 2019. Prof. KIM has worked on the history of Warring States period and Qin-Han China for more than 30 years, specializing in the study of bamboo and silk among the ancient East Asian world. In this lecture, Prof. KIM discussed how Confucianism was developed and disseminated in the Han Dynasty by using bamboo and wooden-strip Analects excavated in Hebei Province, Gansu Province and Pyongyang in North Korea as examples. These bamboo and wooden Analects were very similar in word usage and material feature while most of them were produced in the reign of the Emperor Xuan (74-49 BC), when the Han government officially promoted Confucianism. Prof. KIM, therefore, argued the excavated Analects were the standardized teaching materials published and disseminated by the government.
