Congratulations to the Recipients of Bank of China (Hong Kong) Scholarship for Outstanding Student in Chinese History

Our undergraduate Year 1 students, CHEUNG Kit Yee, CHEUK Hiu Ting and CHIU Kwun Ho were each awarded the Bank of China (Hong Kong) Scholarship for Outstanding Student in Chinese History.

The Scholarships are offered by Endeavour Education Centre Limited and Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited. Kit Yee, Hiu Ting and Kwun Ho were among 10 students who were awarded the Scholarship based on their outstanding DSE results in Chinese history. They attended the award presentation ceremony held on 23 November 2018 at 70/F of Bank of China Tower, 1 Garden Road, and each received a scholarship of HK$50,000.

Staffing Arrangements on University Holidays on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve and Lunar New Year’s Eve

The following staffing arrangements for the University holidays on Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve and Lunar New Year’s Eve will apply on 24 and 31 December 2018, and 4 February 2019 respectively. Departments/units should arrange for skeleton staff to be on duty on these mornings to handle urgent matters and enquiries. Offices will be closed in the afternoon. Skeleton staff (Terms [B] or [C]) on duty on each morning will be given compensation off of half a day.

For essential service units such as the University Health Service, the University Library System, the operations team of the Information Technology Services Centre, the Security Office, the Transport Office, and the Estates Management Office, adequate workforce should remain on duty to provide basic services.

Acting Appointment

Prof. LAI Ming Chiu, Chairman, will be on academic leave from 17 to 20 December 2018 and annual leave from 21 to 24 December 2018. During his absence, Prof. CHEUNG Sui Wai and Prof. HO Pui Yin will serve as the Acting Chair from 17 to 21 December and from 22 to 24 December 2018, respectively.

Recapping the Academic Seminar “文本與禮儀：文字對鄉土社會的改造” conducted by Prof. HE Xi on 23 November 2018

By tracing the history of the Li people in the Five-Finger Mountains area in the center of Hainan Island, Prof. HE Xi illustrated how society changed when it was exposed to written knowledge. Literacy can influence how people think and therefore change the structure of a society. From the late Qing to the 1950s, outsiders with different motivations came to the Five-Finger Mountains area. People who lived in the mountains also began to apply the knowledge learnt from the literate world. In the framework of ethnography, mountain residents were classified into different Li sub-ethnic groups and local elites utilized this framework to protect their status in the 20th century turbulent environment. The construction of the images of the Li ethnic group influenced not only academic research but also socialist transformations in the Five-Finger Mountains area in the 1950s.

Recapping the “CUHK History Day 2018” held on 24 November 2018

The Department held the CUHK History Day 2018 on 24 November 2018. This annual event serves as a platform for the Department to share the teaching and learning of history with the secondary school sector. Participants enjoyed informative and interesting public lectures delivered by three faculty members of the Department on the theme “Orderliness, Chaos, Prosperity and Decline”. Four outstanding alumni were invited to share their career paths that began as a history graduate. In addition, two undergraduate students shared their learning experiences with participants, including the pleasure of undertaking internships and overseas research trips during the summer.

The History Day ended with a tour of the CUHK Art Museum and games organised by the Department’s History Society in the afternoon. The event was well received and attended by around 200 participants from 33 secondary schools.

Academic Seminar

Call for Articles – MA Programme in Comparative and Public History

The MA Programme in Comparative and Public History now calls for articles. All undergraduates and postgraduate students of the Department of History are welcome to submit articles. Articles, with a length of between 1,000 and 2,000 words, can be written in English or Chinese. Any aspects relating to campus life, anecdotes concerning studies and historical subject matters are acceptable, with photo attachments required.

All submitted articles will be reviewed by the MA Programme. The Programme reserves the right to make any changes deemed necessary. Accepted articles will be published on social media platforms of the MA Programme and authors will be remunerated.
