Recapping the Academic Seminar “Understanding the Life of a Research Student: Developing the Skill of History Teaching” conducted by Prof. Ian MORLEY on 17 September 2021

Prof. Ian MORLEY gave an informative talk on “Understanding the Life of a Research Student: Developing the Skill of History Teaching” to our postgraduate research students on 17 September 2021, during which he demonstrated the importance and benefits of developing good teaching skills for their future careers. He stressed that becoming a better teacher can help one become a better researcher and writer, as it requires one to think about one’s audience while formulating the format and content of a class. He also reminded students that strong teaching skills in academia are crucial as it often weighed equally as their research ability in appraisals. During the talk, Prof. MORLEY gave students practical tips on developing their basic teaching skills, which include: making the aims of the class clear, familiarising with the classroom, catering for different learning styles, interacting with the class, and communicating with well-designed PowerPoint slides. He stressed the importance of applying reflective practice in refining one’s teaching skills, the necessity of preparation for online teaching and learning, as well as how one should approach small group teaching and engage students. Prof. MORLEY reminded students that their teaching duties should be summed up as instructions, education and guidance, and integration. In a review exercise, he got students to think about their strategy for developing their teaching skills whilst studying History at CUHK and their plan for laying a solid foundation for their career development.
