Prof. TANG Chung introduced how to study the formation of civilisation and nation by using archaeological method, especially the importance of social archaeology. Based on his archaeological research in Erlitou (二里頭) and other regions, he compared the Yazhang (牙璋) in different archaeological sites, and studied its origin, development and the spread. Prof. TANG pointed out that one type of Yazhang probably originated from Wangjinglou (望京樓) and spread to Jinsha (金沙) and Sanxingdui (三星堆) to Vietnam’s Xom Ren. This reflected the north to south spread of jade culture, and was also a symbol of early Chinese national culture.
The Department held the CUHK History Day 2017 on 4 November 2017. This annual event serves as a platform for the Department to share the teaching and learning of history with the secondary school sector. Participants enjoyed the informative and interesting public lectures delivered by three faculty members of the Department on the theme “民生日用:我們的日常史”. Three undergraduate students shared their learning experiences with the participants, including the pleasure of undertaking internships and overseas research trips during the summer.
The History Day ended with a tour to the University Library and CUHK Art Museum in the afternoon. The event was well received and attended by over 300 participants from 43 secondary schools.
