Prof. CHOW Kai-wing of the History Department, University of Illinois, was invited by the Institute of Chinese Studies, the Centre for Chinese History of the Department of History and the CUHK–Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation Asia-Pacific Centre for Chinese Studies to present a lecture to members of CUHK and the public.
Prof. CHOW started his lecture by defining the concept of mercantile literati (shishang 士商) in the Qing Dynasty. He then examined inscriptions on stele and other source materials to explore the role played by mercantile literati in social affairs such as maintaining local orders and publicising civil education. Prof. CHOW introduced the theory of “civil society” proposed by Jürgen Habermas in his conclusion. He further compared the differences between mercantile literati society in the Qing Dynasty and “civil society” in 18th-century Europe.
The exhibition booth of the Department of History was located on the G/F of Esther Lee Building. The Department arranged four academic counselling sessions and two chat room sessions on that day. The occasion offered a great opportunity for secondary students, teachers and parents to understand more about CUHK and the Department, as well as obtain the latest information on the Department’s BA programme such as admission criteria, curriculum, learning experience and university life. The entire floor was filled with participants eagerly seeking information.
