The Mid-Autumn Festival falls on 24 September 2018. We wish you all a happy Mid-Autumn Festival!
Prof. WANG Di of the History Department, University of Macau, was invited by the Department to present a lecture to the Department’s postgraduate students.
A 1945 sociological study of Mr. Lei, leader of Chengdu’s Paoge secret brotherhood and his family was conducted by a Yenching University student, Shen Baoyuan. This study is the foundation of Prof. WANG Di’s latest book Violence and Order on the Chengdu Plain: The Story of a Secret Brotherhood in Rural China, 1939-1949 (Stanford University Press, 2018). In his lecture, Prof. WANG began with a presentation of Shen’s academic training in the Department of Sociology, Yenching University. Then he discussed how western sociological and anthropological theories influenced a whole generation of Chinese academics in the Republic era. Prof. WANG used his latest book to demonstrate how to use field investigations conducted in the Republic of China in historical research. He pointed out that these investigations not only documented contemporary historical circumstances, but also reflected the investigators’ values and interests. Therefore, when using these materials, it is also essential to understand the investigators’ background as well as the purpose of their investigations.
