Using Information Responsibly for Your Assignments: Using Information Responsibly

Using Information Responsibly

Academic Honesty

  • Information from all sources (no matter in print, online or other means) has copyright
  • This is the ethics of research
  • Respect the author by giving credit to the sources you used to write your paper
  • Referencing the source of materials you have used or referred to allows readers to locate the original works easily and thus they can trace your chain of ideas

How?

  • Making references - citations for the materials that you have used or referred to
  • Citations can be found in the text or at the end of the work in a bibliography or reference list
  • Otherwise you are plagiarizing

What is Plagiarism?

  • An ethical issue
  • “Plagiarism is the act of using the work of others (in particular the writing of others) as one's own
  • “The most obvious and substantial type of plagiarism is copying whole articles, sections, paragraphs or whole sentences from other publications without acknowledgement. This is clearly unacceptable.”

Always make complete citations whenever you are using or referring other’s ideas or materials Steal ideas / papers from your friends or others as your own without making reference
