Bachelor of Science in Community Health Practice
This is a two-year full-time credit-based articulation honours programme leading to a Bachelor of Science in Community Health Practice degree awarded by the Faculty of Medicine, The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
The JC School of Public Health and Primary Care of the Faculty of Medicine has designed this two-year, full-time Bachelor of Science in Community Health Practice programme. It not only facilitates articulation from Associate Degree/Higher Diploma programmes, but also is a pathway for advancement to a Master of Public Health.
All sub-degree students from Hong Kong are welcome to apply for admission to the Bachelor of Science in Community Health Practice programme.
Programme Structure
Curriculum
The programme aim is to equip graduates with the knowledge, skills and competencies to apply health theories, which are essential for the effective implementation of community health programmes. The curriculum is geared towards a broader perspective on community health practice. Teaching is linked to the core competencies of community health practitioners, with reference to the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, U.S.A. and the Galway Consensus Conference Statement on health promotion and health education in 2007.
Graduation Requirement
Students are required to complete at least 69 units to fulfill graduation requirement within the normative study period of 2 years. Here is the course list offered by JC School of Public Health and Primary Care:
Experiential Learning
Induction Programme
Students will participate in site visits covering government, private, and non-governmental organisations to explore the students’ perspective on professional public health practices.
Research Project and Practicum
Students are required to work closely with various organisations to complete 220 hours of supervised field work in a community setting. Students will gain hands-on experience to work in, and work with, the community to promote health. Students will learn to develop, implement, and evaluate health promotion programme to improve community health in Hong Kong.
Student Support
Year Coordinator system
To maintain continuous rapport with students throughout their 2-year studies. A Year Coordinator will take care of all students in the same year of study, and provide extra support or refer students to external services and regular Teacher-and-Student gatherings will be organized.
Peer Assisted Study Session (PASS)
PASS is a program where students work together to consolidate understanding, reinforce key concepts and develop effective study strategies. Each session is facilitated by PASS Leaders; students who have excelled in the course in the past.
Mentorship Programme
In order to enhance the career prospect of undergraduate programmes students of JCSPHPC and nurture the local community of caring public health talents, Mentors (alumni) will offer guidance to mentees (current students) on career planning and development as well as broadening their horizons.
