CU Medicine Celebrates its Ruby Jubilee with “Succession, Innovation and Dedication” as Theme

2021 marks the 40th anniversary of the Faculty of Medicine at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CU Medicine). A series of exciting celebration activities have been planned along the theme of “Succession, Innovation and Dedication”. Around 100 members of the University management, the Faculty’s 40th Anniversary Organising Committee members, deanery, alumni, students and staff joined the Launch Ceremony of CU Medicine 40th Anniversary and Community Service Programme on 25 September at the Sir Run Run Shaw Hall, CUHK, for a reunion and to officially launch the celebratory activities for the coming year.

40th Launch Ceremony

Around 100 members of the University management, the Faculty’s 40th Anniversary Organising Committee members, deanery, alumni, students and staff join the Launch Ceremony of CU Medicine 40th Anniversary and Community Service Programme to officially launch the celebratory activities for the coming year.

Officiating at the launch ceremony, Professor Rocky TUAN, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK, commended the Faculty’s achievements and contributions, “As a relatively young medical school, CU Medicine has achieved outstanding accomplishments with its many groundbreaking medical research discoveries and ever-growing cadre and family of brilliant graduates. Over the years, CU Medicine has grown in leaps and bounds, and with the rapid development of information technology, has brought innovative medical solutions and healthcare services that benefit patients around the world. The Faculty has ably demonstrated its social responsibility by taking on the challenges, including the recent COVID-19 pandemic. Devoted members of the Faculty have contributed in multiple ways to help the community combat the disease. The recent opening of the CUHK Medical Centre (CUHKMC), the city’s first non-profit private teaching hospital wholly owned by a university, will for sure give a big boost to the teaching and research capacity of the Faculty for making greater impact on health services in the community, in the region and in the world.”

Professor Francis KL CHAN, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, remarked, “CU Medicine started from a very humble beginning with a small piece of barren land and some ‘container-classrooms’. Over the past 40 years, the Faculty has been working diligently to bring out talent in the healthcare sector which has included some 5,000 physicians and 20,000 nurses, pharmacists, traditional Chinese medicine practitioners and other healthcare professionals. We are pleased yet humble to be ranked amongst the top 40 medical schools in the world on our 40th anniversary. These outstanding achievements have only been made possible by the continuous support of the University, the Faculty’s members, alumni and the community at large over the years. As the saying goes, ‘Few men, drinking at a rivulet, stop to consider its source’. We are most grateful to the late Professor Gerald CHOA, our founding Dean, for his vision and leadership in laying a very strong foundation and leaving a rich legacy that enables the Faculty to thrive and flourish. Looking ahead, we will continue to pass on the virtues of our predecessors, thrive on the spirit of innovation and dedicate ourselves to serving patients with all our hearts, with the ultimate goal of leading the world in advancing medical innovation and services for the betterment of global health.”

Organising Leadership Summit on Medical Innovation and Technological Development in 2022

CU Medicine has been conducting a number of activities to celebrate its Ruby Jubilee. Professor Philip CHIU, Chairman of the 40th Anniversary Organising Committee, gave the exciting news that the Faculty is going to hold the Leadership Summit on Medical Innovation and Technological Development in the coming year, “With the rapid development of technology, Hong Kong is leading in many areas of medical research. By gathering global leaders in medical innovation and technology, government officials, and key stakeholders from all over the world, the Leadership Summit will bring together the best minds to anticipate the future direction of medical innovation and to map out a strategic development plan for Hong Kong and the region.”

Utilising Expertise and Knowledge of CU Medicine Members to Serve the Community

In addition to passing on the spirit of caring for the community, alumni of the Faculty of Medicine, in collaboration with students, staff and various partners, have organised a number of community activities. The Community Health Outreach programme organised by the Collaborating Centre for Oxford University and CUHK for Disaster and Medical Humanitarian Response (CCOUC) at CU Medicine visited the elderly and distributed face masks to the needy. A session on public health education at the SMART Fun Day 2021 was organised by CUHK Sports Medicine Team, Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (ORT), and the Faculty has conducted an eye checking activity in collaboration with Lok Sin Tong Benevolent Society, Kowloon and the Hong Kong Baptist Hospital. More activities under the Programme will be launched in the coming months.

40th Anniversary Logo Symbolising “Cultivation” and “Global Engagement”

Over the past 40 years, CU Medicine has thrived to become one of the world’s top 40 medical schools. It has become an institution dedicated to the training of talented healthcare professionals and top scientists, and has made a positive impact on and difference to healthcare services.

40th ceremony

The logo, specially designed to celebrate its 40th anniversary, symbolises the Faculty’s succession, innovation and dedication throughout the years. In addition to the purple and green colours of the Faculty, the logo also incorporates the image of a Leaf, signifying cultivation and growth. It symbolises the unceasing efforts of the Faculty to improve people's health through the best education, research and patient care.

The design of the “0” in the “40” logo uses the concept of YIN and YANG to highlight the Faculty’s mission to bring together the essence of East and West. The image of Globe signifies the medical school’s vision of “connecting with the world”, embodying the spirit of healing regardless of race and national boundaries. The Faculty will continue its commitment to translating its research findings into clinical applications and making contributions to address increasingly complex global health issues.
