Bachelor of Science in Gerontology

This is a two-year full-time credit-based articulation honours programme leading to a Bachelor of Science in Gerontology degree awarded by the Faculty of Medicine, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. 

The JC School of Public Health and Primary care offered this programme in response to the expanding ageing population and the associated aged care workforce shortage in Hong Kong.

All sub-degree students from Hong Kong are welcome to apply for admission to the Bachelor of Science in Gerontology programme.

Programme Structure

Curriculum 

The Bachelor of Science Programme in Gerontology is a UGC-funded two-year full-time articulation programme designed for associate degree or higher diploma graduates. It aims at equipping students with knowledge and skills to take on aged care service planning; interdisciplinary coordination; planning and implementing care management, empowerment programmes, telecare and transitional care in a wide variety of elderly health and social care settings. Through this programme, students will be equipped with the well sought-after capacities in aged services management and delivery.

Graduation Requirement

Students are required to complete at least 69 units to fulfill graduation requirement within the normative study period of 2 years. Here is the course list offered by JC School of Public Health and Primary Care: 

Experiential Learning

Induction Programme

Students will participate in site visits covering government, private, and non-governmental organisations to explore the students’ perspectives on professional public health practices.

 

Gerontological Practicum

Students are required to work closely with various organisations to complete 180 hours of supervised fieldwork in a community setting. Students will gain hands-on experience working in, and working with, the community to promote health.

Student Support

Year Coordinator system 

To maintain continuous rapport with students throughout their 2-year studies. A Year Coordinator will take care of all students in the same year of study, and provide extra support or refer students to external services and regular Teacher-and-Student gatherings will be organized.

Peer Assisted Study Session (PASS)

PASS is a program where students work together to consolidate understanding, reinforce key concepts and develop effective study strategies. Each session is facilitated by PASS Leaders; students who have excelled in the course in the past.

Mentorship Programme

In order to enhance the career prospect of  undergraduate programmes students of JCSPHPC and nurture the local community of caring public health talents, Mentors (alumni) will offer guidance to mentees (current students) on career planning and development as well as broadening their horizons.

Articulation Pathway

Graduates with good academic results can pursue postgraduate studies in various disciplines, such as master’s  programme in public health, health service management, rehabilitative
sciences, nursing, or social work.

Career Prospect

Graduates can pursue a career in a wide range of social and health care settings providing active aged and long-term care services. They can start their career as a multi-skilled practitioner  in gerontological care and take up key roles in coordinating inter-disciplinary care, planning and implementing evidence-based care models (such as care management, empowerment programme, telecare, and transitional care), and performing service administration, evaluation and reengineering. They can also advance to higher management levels after accumulating adequate work experience.
