The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and The University of Sydney (USYD) have identified each other as a strategic partner and the two universities have been working closely on different fronts of teaching and research. With a view to promoting global strategic partnership and inspiring new avenues of collaboration, the two universities are organizing a series of events to bring researchers together to gain insights into making use of international opportunities to develop their global network and research work.

 

USYD is a leading research university consistently ranked as one of the top five universities in Australia. The University has strengths in a variety of disciplines. Its research is multi-disciplinary and focused on tackling the world’s greatest challenges. USYD was ranked second in the world and first in Australia by the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings which measure how universities perform against the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for two consecutive years (2020 and 2021).

 

Sydney-CUHK SDGs Symposium – Soil Health & Sustainability, 28 November 2022

 

 

CUHK and USYD share a strong commitment to addressing society’s greatest challenges and have been collaborating to advance the UN SDGs. To achieve this shared aspiration, a joint workshop titled “Partnership for Zero Hunger and Response to Climate Change” was held in May 2022 to explore collaborations in tackling food security and climate change and promoting sustainable agriculture.

 

Following the success of the workshop, several working groups have been formed to develop specific areas of interest. One of these working groups focuses on Soil Health and is led by Prof. Jerome Hui of the School of Life Sciences at CUHK and Prof. Budiman Minasny of the School of Life and Environmental Sciences at USYD. To understand the strengths of the two institutions and create synergy to catalyze collaboration, a virtual symposium titled “Soil Health and Sustainability” will be held on Monday, 28 November at 12:00nn–2:00pm (HK time) for researchers to share their research and discuss collaboration opportunities. Topics covered include Plant-Microbes Interaction; Soil Microbial Diversity; Macrofauna in Soil; Soil and Climate Change; and Emerging Technologies for Studying Soil Genomics.

 

This symposium will be beneficial to those who would like to take advantage of international opportunities and is particularly relevant to early career researchers who are keen to develop their global network.

Sydney-CUHK SDGs Workshop – Partnership for Zero Hunger and Response to Climate Change, 24 May 2022

 

 

CUHK and USYD share strong commitment to addressing society’s greatest challenges and advancing the UN SDGs. Both universities have notable research achievements in food security, sustainable agriculture, and soil science.

 

On 24 May 2022, the ‘Partnership for Zero Hunger and Response to Climate Change’ workshop was hosted by the State Key Laboratory of Agrobiotechnology (CUHK) and the Sydney Institute of Agriculture to explore collaborations to tackle food security and climate change and promote sustainable agriculture. Twelve speakers from the two universities spoke on crop genomics, sustainable legume production and application, emerging technologies in agriculture and environmental research, and soil resilience, and discussed opportunities for further collaborations.

CUHK-USYD SDGs Webinar Series – Partnering for Sustainability Challenges: Climate, Oceans, Cities & Communities, 18 August 2021 

 

 

CUHK and USYD share strong commitment to addressing society’s greatest challenges and advancing the UN SDGs. To encourage constructive dialogues and collaborations in sustainable development, the two universities are jointly organizing a series of SDG-themed webinars, with the first one focusing on sustainability held on 18 August 2021. This webinar showcased two joint research projects in urban climate and health, and marine ecosystem which have relevance to SDG 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities, SDG 13 Climate Action, and SDG 14 Life Below Water. A networking opportunity was provided for participants to mingle with the speakers and other attendees to exchange ideas and contacts, and potential funding opportunities to support CUHK-USYD collaborations were explored.

CUHK-USYD Partnership Showcase Webinar “Demystify the Secret of Successful International Collaboration”, 5 July 2021 

 

 

With a view to promoting global strategic partnership and inspiring new avenues of international collaboration, CUHK and USYD jointly organized a public webinar titled “Demystify the Secret of Successful International Collaboration” on 5 July 2021 to showcase some of the most successful collaborations to date in advancing research on diabetes, information engineering, and integrative medicine. The event featured seven speakers from both universities who shared their valuable experiences in building and sustaining collaborations, as well as a panel discussion chaired by Prof. Mai-har Sham, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) of CUHK, to shed light on the ways to grow academic network, attract resources, and overcome challenges to generate synergy for successful outcomes. The event welcomed 70 participants from 19 universities and organizations.
