Indian professor brings expertise in Buddhism to CUHK

The public lecture given by Prof. Vijay Kumar Singh (middle, front) attracts a wide group of participants from the CUHK community.

As part of the University’s global engagement effort, CUHK collaborates with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) in offering the ICCR Visiting Professorship of Indian Studies Programme. This year, the University welcomes Prof. Vijay Kumar Singh, Chairperson of the Department of Chinese and Tibetan Language of Panjab University in India who is hosted by the Department of Cultural and Religious Studies. During his visit, Prof. Singh has taught four courses on Buddhism and given two public lectures on ‘Human Suffering and Buddhism’ and ‘Lam Tso Nam Sum: A Representative Text of Lam Rim Teachings of Tsong Kha Pa’, allowing students and the campus community to learn more about the Indian culture at CUHK.

Prof. Singh is much impressed with the academic environment at CUHK. ‘The visiting programme serves as a good platform in linking Indian education and culture with different parts of the world. I enjoy the intellectual exchange with academics and students here as they are all committed to excellence. The department’s and central library’s archival collections have well supported my scholarly pursuits. I will cherish memories of academic discussions and cross-disciplinary activities at CUHK.’

To strengthen engagement with India, the University received Ms. Satwant Khanalia, Consul General of India in Hong Kong in November where she met with the Vice-Chancellor to explore collaboration on various fronts. She also took the opportunity to meet with Prof. Singh and Indian students at CUHK.
