Assessment
Drives the Curriculum: How
can items be written to assess higher order thinking skills? |
|
Facilitator: |
Prof. Carmel McNaught, CLEAR, CUHK.
|
Detail: |
A range
of assessment strategies were examined, both those which could be
marked objectively (e.g. multiple choice items) and those which would
be marked on a more subjective basis (e.g. essays or presentations).
Once
the learning outcomes were clear (session 1), how did we decide what
assessment strategies were likely to be most appropriate for particular
purposes? The idea of an assessment matrix was used.
The
skills needed for writing some forms of assessment items were practiced,
focusing especially on those which related to higher order thinking
or complex professional skills. Checklists were provided to assist
here.
A final
point for discussion was that sharing assessment criteria with students
was likely to improve their performance.
