Learning by Teaching: Rethinking Experiential Learning in General Education
Learning by Teaching: Rethinking Experiential Learning in General Education
Date: 20 Jun 2022 (Mon)
Time: 12:00 nn – 1:30 pm
Speaker: Dr. Li Ming Kenneth (Office of University General Education)
Delivery Mode: Online via ZOOM
Language: English (supplemented with Cantonese)
Abstract
Learning is a process in which knowledge is created through the transformation of experience. Unlike traditional learning, experiential learning is an active learning process through direct experience and reflection. The direct experience could enhance the understanding of course concepts and foster deep thinking on the application of book knowledge from multiple aspects in real-life situations. The concrete experience could also foster a sense of relevance, immediacy, and empathy, thereby engaging learners in active self-reflection, which often leads to a change in their perceptions, attitudes, and values. Aligned with the University’s vision to enrich students’ learning experience, co-curricular experiential learning elements have been developed in many courses in the GE Foundation Programme, the four GE areas, and College GE. Supported by the Teaching Development and Language Enhancement Grant (2019-2022), a Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)-related Experiential Learning Activities Fund was established to support experiential learning initiatives in the SDG-GE courses. Over the years, GE Teachers have been experimenting with various experiential learning activities in their classes. On the one hand, these activities benefit students’ learning; on the other hand, the design and implementation of these activities can be challenging, in particular under the influence of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Using experiential learning activities in different GE courses as study cases, this talk shares the values and practice of experiential learning in GE as well as the reflection on its challenges and ways ahead.

Dr. Li has developed the Area B GE course UGEB2296 Experiencing and Rethinking Science and Technology in Agriculture, which is an experiential learning course on modern agriculture, permaculture, and related Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). He has also co-taught the College GE courses GESH1010 Orientation and Outreach and GESH4010 Work and Productive Life. Time: 12:00 nn – 1:30 pm
Delivery Mode: Online via ZOOM

Abstract
Hong Kong has its peculiar form of societal multilingualism and multiculturalism. It is important for university students to understand the linguistic diversity and various sociolinguistic issues in this multilingual city. This presentation talks about the design of UGED1146 Chinese Language, Culture and Language Learning. This GE course covers topics like, the relationship between language and culture, sociolinguistics and multilingualism in Hong Kong, as well as theories and practice in teaching Chinese as a second language. UGED1146 involves a mixture of international students, Mandarin-speaking students, and local students. The final student-led symposium motivates students to reading relevant literature, to conduct collaborative research projects, as well as to actively discuss language and cultural issues. In this presentation, Dr. Lee also introduces his research regarding the learning and teaching of Cantonese as a Second Language (CanSL) and his design of a Cantonese Peer Tutoring System for students at the university. This peer tutoring system provide opportunities for CanSL students to use the target language outside classes with their peers at the university and, eventually promote mutual help among students with different linguistic and cultural backgrounds, as well as diversity and inclusion.

[Jan 12 update] In view of the increasing number of reported cases of COVID-19, the GE Seminar below will be conducted online via Zoom.
The “Participatory Action Research” (PAR) Approach for GE Courses
Speaker: Dr. Tang Wai Man, Wyman (Department of Anthropology)
Date: 19 January 2022 (Wed)
Time: 12:00 nn – 1:30 pm
Venue: Rm 701, Hui Yeung Shing Building
Delivery Mode: Online via ZOOM
Language: Cantonese
Abstract
School learning is often assumed to be abstract, independent, cognitive, and predetermined. Yet, this kind of learning is often disconnected from the lived-in world; in a school setting, learners often forget the course material within a year of completion. Yet, many studies have shown that humans often learn in practice; affective, social, and physical experiences often contribute to cognitive learning and far transfer of knowledge. In this seminar, Dr. Tang introduce a pedagogical approach called “Participatory Action Research” (PAR) which attempts to link abstract learning with actual practice by arranging learners to conduct mini-ethnography in an unfamiliar field. By reviewing their response papers, such an approach is found to engage the learners to 1) identify nuances in learned concepts and 2) relate the learned concepts with their everyday life. Furthermore, learners who have deep reflection in their papers are often found to have close affective, social, and physical encounters in their field.

He is currently researching a South Asian sport, kabaddi, with the focus its educative value for intercultural education in Hong Kong. Dr. Tang received the Exemplary Teaching Award in General Education 2020.
