The 60s
1961
The predecessor of CLC was established as a private language school by Mrs. Jennie MAK LING to teach Cantonese to expatriates in Hong Kong.
1963
CLC received generous support from the New Asia College and the Yale-China Association and was officially named as the "New Asia--Yale-in-China Chinese Language Center". CLC moved into the former New Asia College campus at Farm Road, Kowloon. The Chinese University of Hong Kong was established as the second university in Hong Kong. CLC started to teach Mandarin (Putonghua).
1967
CLC Director in service, Dr. Francis S. HUTCHINS, representative of the Yale-in-China Association in Hong Kong.
1968
CLC Director in service, Mr. Ming LIU.
The 70s
1974
CLC began to offer courses to CUHK students (both local and International).
The 80s
1980
The grand opening of Fong Shu Chuen Building, donated by the Fong Shu Fook Tong Foundation, the major premises of CLC to achieve its education mission.
1989
Mr. Ming LIU, who had served as the CLC Director for 21 years, retired. During his service, the reputation of CLC grew together with CUHK.
1989
Mr. Cheuk-sang HO served as the acting Director.
The 90s
1990
The grand opening of Fong Yun Wah Hall, CLC's multi-functional hall.
1991
Prof. John C. JAMIESON from the University of California at Berkeley, US, served as the CLC Director until his retirement in 2001.
2000 to Present
2001
Dr. Weiping WU, a linguist from the Center of Applied Linguistics in Washington DC, US, served as CLC Director until his retirement in 2020.
2003
The 40th anniversary of CLC and CUHK.
2004
The commencement of the four major academic activities of CLC (the Language Assessment Project (LAP), the Curriculum Revision Project (CRP), the Teaching Materials Project (TMP), and the Teacher Training Project (TTP)) and the establishment of the Academic Activities Division (AAD).
2007
Commencement of the use of Tsim Sha Tsui classrooms for CLC's part-time programmes.
2009
CLC became part of the Faculty of Arts under the new name "Yale-China Chinese Language Centre". On the same year, the Centre organized the first state level Business Chinese Test (BCT).
2012
The University Programme Section moved to K.K. Leung Building.
2013
The 50th anniversary of CLC and CUHK. CUHK held the state-level Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) for the first time.
2017
The relocation of the down-town learning centre from Tsim Sha Tsui to Jordan.
2020
Prof. HOYAN Hang Fung, Carole, Associate Professor of the Department of Chinese Language and Literature, took over as the CLC Director after the retirement of Dr. WU Weiping.
