CALL FOR PARTICIPATION Professional Workshop on Linguistics and Teaching CSL 16 March 2007 Organized by The New Asia -- Yale-in-China Chinese Language Center (CLC) The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Sponsored by The Chinese University of Hong Kong-Chiang Ching Kuo Foundation Asia-Pacific Centre for Chinese Studies (APC) With support from The National Key Research Center for Linguistics and Applied Linguistics (CLAL), China
|
General Information: As the first workshop of its kind, eminent scholars in the field of linguistics and teaching Chinese as a Second/Foreign Language (CSL) will be invited from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Mainland China and the United States to share with participants their views on how language teaching and learning activities can be guided by findings in linguistic research. Workshop presentations and discussions will center on various issues in teaching CSL, with special reference to phonology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics and other aspects of linguistic theories. It is expected that such a pivotal effort will lead to more research and exploration on the pros and cons of current practices in teaching CSL from a linguistic perspective and, at the same time, provide language teachers with the much needed linguistic knowledge that plays an important role in teaching Chinese. It is hoped that, by sharing theoretical and pedagogical findings in workshops of this kind, CU as an institution of higher learning will contribute not only to the professional development in applied linguistics, but also to the promotion of Chinese language learning and teaching in general. Participants: To be participated by practitioners in the field of language teaching, including professionals, program directors and teachers who are involved in teaching CSL. Individual participants should download and complete the Registration Form and send it with a check to the address as instructed. For institutional registration (up to 20 participants), please contact Shadow or Lois (see information on Registration Form).
