CUHK Chemistry alumnus Xiang ZHOU elected CAS Academician - Department of Chemistry, The Chinese University of Hong Kong

Prof. Xiang Zhou, alumnus of the Department of Chemistry of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, has been elected as a Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), in recognition of his remarkable contributions in the field of chemical biology. There are 65 Academicians elected in 2021, in which 11 of them are specialists in chemistry division. With his great achievements in chemical biology, particular in nucleic acid research, Professor Zhou stands out from the crowd and receives this honour.

Prof. Zhou received his BSc and MSc degree both from Wuhan University in 1986 and 1989 respectively, and earned his PhD degree from the Department of Chemistry of the Chinese University of Hong Kong under supervision of Prof. Kin Shing Chan in 1996. After two postdoc trainings in University of Virginia and University of Maryland, Prof Zhou joined College of Chemistry and Molecular Sciences, Wuhan University, as a Professor in 2001. He served as the Dean of the college from 2005-2020, and was appointed as a Chang Jiang Professor in 2010.

Widely recognized as an academic giant, Professor Zhou’s research interests lie in the fields of chemical biology. Professor Zhou has published widely with over 260 research papers on renowned academic journals including Acc. Chem. Res., Chem. Soc. Rev., Nat. Chem. Biol., Nat.Commun., Sci. Adv.,Chem, J. Am. Chem. Soc.,Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., Nucleic Acid Res., JACS Au and Cell Chem. Biol. He has yielded fruitful research results. As a distinguished scholar, Professor Zhou was awarded numerous honours, such as Wuxi PharmaTech Life Science and Chemistry Award; Outstanding Youth Fund from NSFC; First Class Award in Natural Sciences for Research Excellence by the Hubei Province in 2010 and 2020 respectively. He is a Fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry since 2018.

CAS Members are elected by all current CAS Members with voting rights. Researchers, professors or scholars of similar ranking or specialists of Chinese nationality with outstanding and innovative achievement in the scientific sector can be nominated and elected as a CAS Member. Currently there are 4 CAS academicians in Department of Chemistry of CUHK, including Prof. Thomas Mak, Prof. Henry Wong, Prof. Chi Wu, and Prof. Zuowei Xie. Our alumnus, Prof. Xiaoming Chen, has also been elected as a Member of CAS in 2009.

中大化學系舊生周翔教授獲選中國科學院院士

本校化學系哲學博士周翔獲選為2021中國科學院院士，以表揚他在化學領域的重要貢獻。同屆共選出65位院士，當中11位隸屬化學部。周教授憑藉其於核酸化學生物方面的卓越成就，最終脫穎而出。

周院士在武漢大學獲理學學士(1986)和理學碩士(1989)學位。他於1996年在化學系獲哲學博士學位，師從陳建成教授。隨後周院士在美國維珍尼亞大學和馬里蘭大學作博士後研究。於2001年回母校武漢大學化學與分子科學學院任教授。他曾任於2005-2020年任該學院院長，和於2010年獲聘為長江教授。他的研究方向為化學生物學。

周院士長期致力於核酸化學生物的研究, 主要研究方向為: (1) 小分子對核酸結構的識別及其功能調控研究; (2) 基於核酸化學技術在疾病診療中的應用。通過小分子對核酸結構的識別和功能調控，開發核酸靶向藥物分子和重大疾病診斷技術，取得了系統的、在國際上有影響力的創新性成果, 推進了核酸化學生物學研究發展。他以通訊或共同通訊作者在Acc. Chem. Res., Chem. Soc. Rev., Nat. Chem. Biol., Nat. Commun., Sci. Adv., Chem, J. Am. Chem. Soc., Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., Nucleic Acid Res., JACS Au, Cell Chem. Biol. 等期刊上發表論文260餘篇。獲湖北省自然科學一等獎 (兩次，排名第一)，藥明康得生命化學研究獎二等獎，國家自然科學基金優秀青年科學基金資助。

中國科學院院士由具有投票權的全體院士投票產生，獲選人須在科學技術領域上作出系統化及創造性的成就及重大貢獻。院士增選每兩年舉辦一次。香港中文大學化學系現有中國科學院院士4名，包括麥松威院士、黃乃正院士、吳奇院士及謝作偉院士。本系舊生陳小明博士亦於2009獲選為中國科學院院士。
