Important Academic Reminder

For All Students

All students are required to take a Thesis Guidance course (HIST8001) in each term until their theses are finally submitted.
All students are required to complete 9 units of coursework in addition to the required courses. Subject to supervisor’s approval, student may choose to take no more than 3 units of HIST4000-level course. For students taking a course in the undergraduate curriculum, assignments for them are usually more research-oriented than that for undergraduates and are designed and given by the teachers concerned.
The required courses (M.Phil.: HIST6010; Ph.D.: HIST7010) and HIST8001 will be pre-assigned to new students and current students who have never taken these courses before the Course Registration Period. Students who intend to drop the required course(s) have to submit a written application to the Division for consideration.
Students taking HIST6101/7101 “Independent Studies” are required to submit the form “Intention to Take HIST6101/7101 Independent Studies” to the Division during the Course Registration Period.
Supervision: Supervisor is assigned upon admission. All new students are required to return the “Tentative Thesis Title Record Form” to Division Office by 30 November.
All students are required to complete Online Study Plan and Progress Report with approval by their supervisor(s) and the Division Head in October/November and June/July of each academic year.
A student who obtains a cumulative grade point average (GPA) below 2.0 in the preceding term or receives a failure grade in HIST8001 will be put on academic probation. A student cannot submit a thesis while on academic probation.
Students are required to complete an Improving Postgraduate Learning (IPL) module on “Observing Intellectual Property and Copyright Law during Research”. Please visit IPL website for details.
Students admitted in 2022-23 and thereafter, are required to complete and pass an IPL module on “Research Data Management Training” in their first year of studies. This is an online module and relevant information can be accessed from the website: https://www.cuhk.edu.hk/clear/download/IPL-Researchskills.pdf.
Students are required to complete an online Research Ethics Training (RET) module on “Publication Ethics” offered by the Office of Research and Knowledge Transfer Services (ORKTS) and obtain a valid Publication Ethics Certificate for graduation. Relevant information can be accessed from the RET.

For Ph.D. Students Only

Fields of Study: Ph.D. students should choose a major field and a minor field from the fields of specialisation of the programme. An advisory committee, which is composed of the supervisor(s) from the major field and one teacher from minor field will then be formed to supervise the student.
New students are advised to study the Study Scheme and the curriculum carefully and to make decision on their fields of specialisation as early as they can. Please refer to the online Postgraduate Student Handbook at the Graduate School’s Homepage. Please also return the “Formation of Advisory Committee Form” to Division Office by 30 November.
Ph.D. students are required to complete HIST7101 Independent Studies preferably offered by supervisor in Year 1.
Qualifying Examination: Students are required to take a Qualifying Examination on field knowledge and thesis proposal before advancing to Ph.D. candidacy.
Students required to pass the Qualifying Examination within the maximum period appended below, on condition that such period should be not less than one year from the admission date and at least six months before the normative study end date.

- With research Master’s degree:
  - Full time: 24 months
  - Part time: 32 months
- Without research Master’s degree:
  - Full time: 36 months
  - Part time: 48 months

Students should fulfill the Third Language Requirement as prescribed in the Study Scheme.
Students are required to present at least one paper at a local workshop or international conference before completion of programme.
