Biography

Marc Ka-chun CHONG received his BSc degree in Statistics and PhD degree in Public Health from the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) in 2006 and 2011 respectively. Currently, he is an Assistant Professor in the JC School of Public Health and Primary Care (SPHPC), Assistant Professor (by courtesy) in Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Faculty of Medicine in CUHK, and Associate Researcher (by courtesy) in Shenzhen Research Institute, CUHK.

Dr. Chong’s multidisciplinary research focuses on examining the complex interactions between environmental changes, human behaviors and infectious disease transmissions via static and dynamic mathematical approaches. His research interests include biostatistics, infectious disease modelling, environmental epidemiology, and applied research of artificial intelligence. To date, he has published more than 120 articles and is the first/corresponding author for 45 of the publications in international peer-reviewed journals.

Dr. Chong was a principal/co-principal investigator for eight external competitive grants. He was awarded the Health and Medical Research Fund Research Fellowship in 2019, supporting a training of health economics at Business School, Imperial College London, United Kingdom. He was appointed as Statistical Advisor of Hong Kong Medical Journal since 2017. He also served as Senior Associate Editor of BMC Infectious Diseases (since 2023), Associate Editor of BMC Public Health (Biostatistics and methods section) (since 2019), Academic Editor of PLOS ONE (since 2019), and PLOS Climate (since 2021).

Dr. Chong is working as a biostatistician in the Centre for Clinical Research and Biostatistics (former Centre for Clinical Trials) since 2006, possessing rich experience in conducting various statistical analysis of academic and industrial clinical investigations. With the expertise of biostatistics, he engages in providing supports and trainings of data analytics and research design not just in SPHPC, but also in different CUHK departments, including Institute of Digestive Disease, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, School of Chinese Medicine, Department of Imaging and Interventional Radiology, School of Biomedical Sciences, and Department of Anatomical & Cellular Pathology.

In respect of external services, Dr. Chong is/was a statistical consultant for providing statistical services on Surgical Outcomes Monitoring and Improvement Program, Intensive Care Units Outcomes Monitoring Program, Neurosurgical Outcomes Monitoring and Improvement Program, Development of Refined Population-based Model to Inform Resource Allocation held by Hospital Authority.
