Biography

Dr. Johnson Wang obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Master of Medicine from School of Public Health, Peking University, and his Doctor of Philosophy in Public Health from JC School of Public Health and Primary Care, the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He has been appointed as Research Assistant Professor in JC School of Public Health and Primary Care since 2016. Dr. Wang received the Early Career Award by the International Society of Behavioral Medicine in 2016. He is a member of the Hong Kong Society of Behavioral Health, and the Associate Director of the Community Research Program on AIDS. He is the Principle Investigator (PI)/Co-PI of 12 research grants (HK$9,170,656.2) and has published over 60 papers in peer-reviewed journals.

Research Interests

  • Inter-disciplinary behavioral health research

    • Planning and evaluating health promotion programs. Applying behavioral health theories to design health promotion programs. Experienced in conducting randomized controlled trials to evaluate behavioral interventions.

    • Applying behavioral health theories to understand determinants of health behaviors related to non-communicable diseases and HIV/STD prevention (e.g., healthy lifestyles, cancer screening, addictive behaviors, HIV-related risk/preventive behaviors, and vaccination).

    • Exploring the use of artificial intelligence (e.g., fully-automated conversational agents “Chatbot”) in delivering behavioral interventions.

    • Implementation science (Applying REAIM framework to implement evidence-based health promotion and to transfer effective health promotion into routine health services).

  • Mental health research

    • Understanding determinants of mental health problems and neurocognitive function

    • Using psychological theories and techniques (e.g., motivational interviewing) to promote mental health wellbeing.
