IAU: CUHK calling upon higher education to build diversity and inclusion
SDGs as an ideal platform to nurture students to embrace diversity and inclusion.
What can university leaders do outside of the traditional classroom experience to contribute to a more peaceful and inclusive world? In his article for the April 2022 issue of the IAU Horizons, a biannual magazine of the International Association of Universities, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Rocky S. Tuan said that the answer lies in ‘peacebuilding, and the ability to value and build diversity, cooperation and globalisation’.
University education enriches the transition from adolescence to adulthood and has the responsibility of nurturing our youth to grow into responsible citizens. Prof. Tuan remarked, ‘We must rethink our educational objectives and make fundamental reforms to our curricula to help students to develop skills to analyse, critique and evaluate information, to understand and appreciate facts to arrive at the truth, and to express our personal views in mutually respectful and non-confrontational ways.’
Prof. Tuan also sees that the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide an excellent and relevant framework to educate students to embrace diversity and inclusion.
