Hong Kong is one of the most developed, urbanised and crowded cities in the world. In recent years, people of the city have begun to ponder if its development can sustain the challenges of the future. Facing an inevitable blaze of globalisation and urbanisation, how do people of Hong Kong and other parts of the world cope with the challenges of urban development and sustainability?

 

  
 

Themed “Designing and Creating Sustainable Communities”, the 2018 ACU (The Association of Commonwealth Universities) Commonwealth Summer School, to be held at The Chinese University of Hong Kong from 1-9 July 2018, is inviting bright-minded students from Hong Kong and all corners of the Commonwealth to discuss the issue with a group of local and international experts in urban planning and development. They include:

  • Professor Jenny Cameron – Geography and Environmental Studies, The University of Newcastle, Australia
  • Mr Christopher Law, JP – Founding Director, Oval Partnership; and Member of Development Committee, West Kowloon Cultural District
  • Professor Ng Mee Kam – Director, Urban Studies Programme, The Chinese University of Hong Kong
  • Professor Peter Ngau – Centre for Urban Research and Innovations, University of Nairobi, Kenya
  • Dr Edgar Pieterse – Director of the African Centre for Cities, University of Cape Town, South Africa
  • Professor Hendrik Tieben – School of Architecture, The Chinese University of Hong Kong
  • Ms Ada Wong, JP – Director, Hong Kong Institute of Contemporary Culture; and Chairperson, Make A Difference Institute

 

 

The Summer School will welcome 50 current postgraduate or final year undergraduate students from Hong Kong and the Commonwealth to the CUHK campus for a week of intensive learning, discussions, and idea exchange. Complementing themed lectures, a number of field trips to key sites within the city will be arranged for participants to gain hands-on experience on how sustainable communities are created and preserved in Hong Kong. Some of the sites include:

  • The Blue House Cluster, a group of revitalised historical tenement buildings
  • Community store and community spaces in Sai Ying Pun
  • Jao Tsung-I Academy, one of the projects in the first batch of Hong Kong’s ‘Revitalising Historic Buildings Through Partnership Scheme’

City tours and cultural events will also be available for participants to experience and engage in the unique East-meets-West culture of Hong Kong, and interact and engage with an international student body.

 

 

Application to the ACU Commonwealth Summer School 2018 is now open and will close at 23:59 GMT on Sunday, 14 January 2018. The registration fee is £400 GBP for students from ACU member universities and £500 GBP for students from non-member institutions. Registration fee covers full Summer School participation, including the academic programme, social events, site visits, accommodation, most meals and airport transportation. Flights and cost of visas and health insurance are not included. Bursaries are available for students from ACU member universities.
