Course Description Introduces the role of Structure in Architecture. Through lectures, in-class activities and field trip, students gain an appreciation of the different roles that structure plays in the design of buildings. The course also explains the different roles of “architect” and “engineer” in the building design profession.
Course Content Lectures introduce concepts using examples of built works. In-class activities involve small model building projects that demonstrate structural behaviour (materials provided). Short field trip (Hong Kong) to experience a few building examples of excellent design practice that illustrate the different approaches to structure in architecture.
Learning Outcomes By the end of this course, student will:

  • Understand the educational and professional procedure for becoming a licensed architect.
  • Understand the importance of structure in building design.
  • Become familiar with a few basic structural principles such as strength, stiffness and lateral bracing.
