Forum on The Cultural Politics of the Performative Space

Forum on The Cultural Politics of the Performative Space

2nd and 3rd February 2018, 10:30am – 6:00pm

Lecture Theatre 3, Science Centre, CUHK

The theatre space, where performances take place, is simultaneously an absent space and a present place. As a space, the theatre allows creators to define the imaginative settings based on the story of the performance. Yet, the theatre is also a venue (place) with its own historical and cultural roots. Joanne Tompkins in her book, Theatre’s Heterotopias: Performance and the Cultural Politics of Space, further developed Foucault’s concept of a theatre as a heterotopic space, proposing that a theatre is a real, yet restrictive (and illusive), space where time is suspended. Moreover, it is a space that allows for reaction and reflection to the cultural and social development of its immediate community. With the advent of contemporary performances responding to socio-political issues in their respective societies, this forum seeks to explore the evolving relationships between performance and space.
