Digestive diseases are rapidly increasing by number and complexity. Cancers related to digestive disorder account for 45% of deaths in WHO Western Pacific region.* In response to the soaring demand for all-round GI professionals, the number of registered gastroenterologists in Hong Kong rose from 61 in 2001 to 199 in 2018. A specialized degree in gastroenterology, therefore, will give you a competitive edge in a commencing and advancing your career in the ever expanding GI field.

You don’t have to be a gastroenterologist or an aspiring one to enroll in our programme. Our alumni come from diverse professional backgrounds.

PROFESSOR GRACE WONG

Programme Director of M.Sc. in Gastroenterology
Professor, Institute of Digestive Disease, CUHK
Professor Grace Wong’s main research interest includes big data research in hepatology, chronic viral hepatitis, and risk prediction and risk reduction of hepatocellular carcinoma, and non-invasive assessment of liver fibrosis. She has published over 350 articles in peer-reviewed journals including Gastroenterology, Journal of Hepatology. Gut and Lancet Gastroenterology and Hepatology. She is currently the editor-in-chief of Hepatology (Hong Kong edition), the associate editor of Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics and Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

PROFESSOR JOSEPH SUNG

As a renowned scientist in gastroenterology, Professor Sung’s research interests include intestinal bleeding, Helicobacter Pylori, peptic ulcer, hepatitis B, colorectal cancer, and other cancers related to the digestive system. Professor Sung and his team proved the relationship between H. Pylori and peptic ulcer diseases. They were first in demonstrating that a course of antibiotics lasting a week can cure H. Pylori infection and successfully treat peptic ulcers and minimize their relapse. At the same time, he and his research team pioneered the use of endoscopic treatment for ulcer bleeding to reduce the need for operative surgery. These research results have a major impact on and have changed the practice of gastroenterology worldwide.

PROFESSOR YEOH ENG KIONG

Professor of Public Health, JC School of Public Health and Primary Care, CUHK
Professor Yeoh is Professor of Public Health and Director of the Centre for Health Systems and Policy Research. He was Director of the School from 2014-2020. His research is in health systems, services and policy with an interest in applying systems thinking in studying how the complex components of health systems interact and interrelate to improve health. He has a vast experience and knowledge in health systems research and in social and elderly services. Prof Yeoh is currently the Principle Investigator of 2 commissioned studies (i) to investigate Hong Kong’s early detection, assessment and response system to COVID-19, and (ii) to evaluate a new primary care initiative – an innovative district health system in Hong Kong.

PROFESSOR JUSTIN WU

Associate Dean (Health Systems), Faculty of Medicine, CUHK
Professor Justin Wu is the Associate Dean (Health Systems) of Faculty of Medicine, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is responsible for the development of collaborative network with private health systems, business and industry partners in Hong Kong, Greater Bay Area and beyond. He is the former Chief Operating Officer of CUHK Medical Centre, the private teaching hospital of CUHK; the founding director of Asia’s first “Global Physician-Leadership Stream” (GPS) of MBChB programme; and the founding director of Hong Kong Institute of Integrative Medicine with the mission of fostering cooperation between Western and Chinese medicine in the healthcare system. He is an eminent teacher with 8 teaching awards of medical education, which include Vice-Chancellor Exemplary Teaching Award, Master Teacher, and Teacher of the Year Awards in CUHK Medicine.

PROFESSOR FUNG HONG

Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer, CUHK Medical Centre
Professor Fung Hong is Professor of Practice in Health Services Management at the Jockey Club School of Public Health & Primary Care at CUHK and the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the CUHK Medical Centre. Before he joined CUHK in 2014, Professor Fung was the Cluster Chief Executive of the New Territories East Cluster and Hospital Chief Executive of the Prince of Wales Hospital at the Hospital Authority (HA) from 2002 to 2013, overseeing the management and operations of 7 public hospitals. Prior to that, he worked in the HA Head Office and was responsible for the planning and development of the public hospital services and facilities for over a decade. He spearheaded the development of HA’s Clinical Management System and electronic patient records. Professor FUNG is well recognized for his expertise in medical leadership, health planning, health informatics, and health services management.
