It was a remarkable and impressive experience for me in participating this program in Gastroenterology, which equips me with a wide range of knowledge over different GI topics, hepatology as well as nutriology. Lectures delivered by prominent experts from different specialties have provided us with not only a multidisciplinary insight into the GI disease, but also practical statistic and critical thinking skills to appraise and learn from literature in the future. By carrying out our research-based project under the guidance of the supervisor through this program, we also get a comprehensive understanding of conducting research in the clinical setting, as well as hone our skills including, research methods and technical writing which are significant in advancing our careers in this field. I am grateful that this program does prepare me for doing clinical research in the next stage and serves as an important step for me to launch my medical career.

This is a comprehensive program covering both medical and surgical aspects of gastroenterology science, which inspired me a lot. It shared the gastroenterology thoroughly, including various GI and liver diseases and their management, which equipped my nursing professionalism, such as I am now confident to explain condition more detailly to my clients. The teaching faculty is also very great, they endeavor to update us the latest GI information and their clinical experiences, so the lectures were interesting and impressing! I would very recommend those who are interested in GI field to study this program as it truly provide lots of insight.

It is a truly precious experience of studying the Master of Science in Gastroenterology at CUHK. My professional knowledge of GI and its updated management skills are well established throughout the two-year programme. All the professors and teachers always gave sufficient guidance to our discussions and balanced our initiative and enjoyment. The final group project further consolidated our understanding of the curriculum. Meanwhile, we were also inspired and motivated by various innovative ways to develop a better relationship within the GI community. For example, participating in the international forum and attending the endoscopic procedures were significantly interesting for me. These excellent arrangements were undoubtedly beneficial to my career path of working as a frontline nurse in a medical ward. I always felt grateful to pursue a postgraduate study here.

Eva MAK, ‘21

Dietitian

The MSc Gastroenterology course in CUHK has deepened my knowledge and inspired me in many areas.

I remembered in one of the practical sessions, the lecturers showed us how to use the FibroScan machine to determine the severity of fatty liver diseases. The lesson was very practical and interesting for those who have never used the device before, like me.

This course also deepened my knowledge of medical management and the pathophysiology of many common gastrointestinal diseases such as GORD, Viral Hepatitis and NAFLD. As a dietitian, my previous learning mainly focused on the dietary aspect to manage these diseases. And the knowledge I gained from the course will help me better manage patients if I work in the clinical area in the future.

I am very grateful to have the opportunity to be under the supervision of Professor Vincent Wong, one of the most well-known experts in the Hepatology field in HK, for the NAFLD research project. From the project, I felt like my knowledge of the risk factors associated with NAFLD have been greatly reinforced. In addition, my research and data analysis skills have also been improved under the guidance of Professor Wong. I believe I am better at using the SPSS Statistical Software for analysis, such as using paired-sample T test, Chi-squared test and logistic regression. Since I am currently working in the research field, hopefully, I will have the opportunity to work on GI-related research projects in the future!

To conclude, I found the MSc Gastroenterology course is very practical. It has helped me deepen my medical knowledge on GI diseases and enhanced my research skills. I would definitely recommend this course to those interested in the field.

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak of the preceding two years, we have experienced the ever changing circumstances of the lectures format. Regardless whether the lectures were virtual or in-person, the curriculum was well taught and considered a success because everyone who worked on the program did their best to adapt to the situation. It was unremarkable to learn from professionals in gastroenterology, hepatology, surgery, radiography, pharmacology, endoscopy, psychology, nutrition, and dietetics, as well as healthcare policy and human resources. The program covered not only comprehensive gastrointestinal knowledge and advancement, but also research techniques, medical statistics, clinical governance, healthcare administration, leadership qualities, complaint, and crisis management. Following the training, I was promoted and given further opportunity to work with the GI nurse at the hospital. I now have the confidence to provide nursing care and counselling to patients suffering from gastrointestinal and liver disorders, particularly inflammatory bowel disease, thanks to the training. I wholeheartedly recommend the program to students from all healthcare disciplines who are interested in the GI specialty.

Nanette Frances HO, ‘19

Clinical Dietitian

This program has been pivotal to my professional development as a clinical dietitian. With increasingly complex patient populations, there is a greater need for healthcare professionals to expand their understanding of intricate medical conditions like gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary diseases. Through the diverse courses and assignments, I gained deeper medical insight and advanced my counselling and research skills, which help optimize the nutrition management of my most complex patients.

I highly enjoyed learning from passionate clinical professors and actively practising doctors who shared their wealth of knowledge and experience during the lectures and workshops. Learning and studying alongside my classmates was the highlight of this program. Their camaraderie, unique perspectives and professional experiences enriched and livened this intensive academic year.

This master’s programme offered me a valuable chance to enhance my clinical knowledge in gastroenterology. Having an in-depth understanding of various gastrointestinal diseases and disease management, I became more confident in my clinical practice. I also acquired skills in communication, health services administration and management, which helped me to improve patient care as well as my career development. Moreover, it was inspiring to participate and learn in the practicum sessions and the international conferences. As the course was informative, interesting and practical, I would recommend it to my colleagues.

LEE Sin Lun, ‘15

Admitting students from different specialties makes this master programme an innovative approach to enhance our knowledge in gastroenterology. It allows me to have a more in-depth and all-rounded understanding of treating and managing patients with gastrointestinal diseases and hence makes me more effective in taking care of my patients.

The most beneficial aspect of this master program is that most of the lectures are conducted by on-the-job professors and doctors who spend their valuable time to teach us and share with us their latest clinical experiences.

It is fruitful to study in this two-year part-time master program while I am working. In fact, doing work and studies at the same time is not that exhausting as it sounds.

This programme is absolutely worth taking for any primary healthcare provider. It equipped me, as a Chinese medicine practitioner, with updated knowledge on gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary diseases that enhance my competence in daily clinical practice and awareness of alarming conditions among patients. It also covered nutrition and psychological interventions in different diseases which are applicable to my clinical work. Furthermore, the programme helped further develop my analytical ability and critical thinking skills by ensuring students have a solid understanding of basic medical statistics and able to appraise other scientific work critically. I am really grateful for the fruitful study experience. Professors and lecturers of MScGI are attentive and have shown their genuine interest in teaching. They explained concepts clearly with their well prepared videos and clinical examples which greatly aided my learning. I highly recommend MScGI to all primary healthcare providers. CUHK’s M.Sc. in Gastroenterology programme provides fantastic coverage of various GI diseases’ pathology and most updated management. Unlike other programmes, this course not only focuses on medical aspects but also provides in-depth knowledge from different fields, e.g. Chinese medicine, physiological management, medical ethics and communicating skills. This programme really enhanced my clinical knowledge and extended my skills, so that I am more effective and efficient in the management of patients with GI diseases.

This master programme also provides excellent networking opportunities. I have met a lot of great health care professionals through this programme. We can share valuable clinical experience and knowledge among us.

With the skills and knowledge acquired in the programme, it is one step closer to explore the new boundary in the GI field. I am proud to say I made the right decision to join the programme.

Sharon CHAN, ‘20

North District Hospital, Hong Kong

Dietitian

This programme provides an excellent platform for dietitians to bridge the knowledge gap between nutritional and clinical management of various gastroenterological diseases. Lectures delivered by experts from different specialties have provided me with insight into the disease from a multidisciplinary perspective, and the practicum sessions in endoscopy and minimal-invasive surgery were eye-opening for allied health professionals. The medical statistics and research methodologies module also equipped me with updated knowledge to carry out research projects and to critically appraise literature for evidence-based practice. Thanks to this fruitful programme, I am now able to deliver a more comprehensive and effective nutrition intervention for my patients with a deeper understanding of the relationship between nutrition and the clinical course and management plan of the underlying gastrointestinal diseases.
