Survival Cantonese for International Students

A non-credit-bearing basic Cantonese course designed for non-Chinese speakers, including exchange and international full-time undergraduate and postgraduate students, who use Chinese as a foreign/ second language and look for survival skills in Cantonese. The course is structured to help students communicate orally with the local people in Cantonese in different scenarios, with student-centred, proficiency-orientated activities based on useful daily expressions and basic vocabulary items. It focuses on student's oral skills and speaking ability. Real life settings are introduced such as shopping, introduction of oneself, asking directions, etc.

Survival Cantonese for Native Putonghua Speakers

A non-credit-bearing basic Cantonese course designed for full-time Putonghua-speaking undergraduate and postgraduate students from Mainland China, Taiwan, or other regions who are looking for survival skills in Cantonese. The course is structured to help students communicate orally with the local people of Hiong Kong in Cantonese in different scenarios, with student-centred, proficiency-orientated activities based on useful daily expressions and basic vocabulary items. The course focuses on student's oral skills and speaking ability.

Cantonese for Real Life Communication (Formal Setting)

A non-credit bearing Cantonese course designed for Putonghua speaking full-time undergraduate students, postgraduate students, tutors or research assistants from Mainland, Taiwan or other regions. The course is structured to help students in learning relevant expressions and to apply them in their tutorial lessons or at work. Training includes: (1) effective utilization of basic Cantonese in communicating with local students during tutorials and (2) proper use of academic Cantonese to make simple description and presentation of one’s thesis to their academic advisors or colleagues. Students will acquire relevant vocabularies under professional setting which in turn help them in adjusting to University and work life in Hong Kong. Ultimately, the learning atmosphere of tutorial class can be improved.

Survival Putonghua for International Students

A non-credit-bearing basic Putonghua course designed for non-native Chinese speakers, including exchange and international full-time students, who use Chinese as a second/foreign language and are looking for survival skills in Putonghua. The course is structured to help students communicate orally with Chinese people in Putonghua in different scenarios, with student-centred, proficiency-oriented activities based on useful daily expressions and basic vocabulary items. It focuses on student's oral skills. Real-life settings are introduced, such as shopping, introduction of family members, asking for directions, etc.

Putonghua for Real-Life Communication (Formal Settings)

A non-credit-bearing Putonghua course designed to provide Cantonese-speaking local or non-local full-time undergraduate or postgraduate students with practical and comprehensive Putonghua training in a causal manner. The course will utilize task banks of the advanced and superior levels of the Computerized Oral Proficiency Assessment (COPA) developed by CLC in 2000, which provides virtual simulation contexts for students. They will be equipped with the skills to complete different language tasks with different functions and be able to communicate with various parties under various real-life situations. Students will also enhance their listening and speaking abilities and their awareness of contextual needs. Focus will be on listening and speaking skills. Instant and professional feedback will be given to students directly in class.
