We live in a culture which is largely dependent on science for its material welfare. Among the biological sciences, areas such as food and drug production, energy production, waste processing, and agriculture are being actively transformed by newly emerging technologies. Some of these novel technologies depend heavily on the use of microorganisms whereas others are not microbiologically oriented.  It is with these in mind that the Eighth International Conference on Global Impacts of Applied Microbiology (GIAM VIII) and the International Conference on Applied Biology and Biotechnology (INCABB) are organized as a joint meeting from August 1st to 5th, 1988 in Hong Kong. The present volume is the proceedings of these Conferences with contributions from Keynote and Plenary Speakers and invited participants.

A wealth of new information has been gathered together in the comprehensive book that encompasses many facets of applied biology and biotechnology. Integrating recent experimental advances with existing knowledge, leading investigators describe in detail such areas as

1.Education in Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology,

2.Microbial Biotechnology,

3.Marine Bioresources and Biotechnology,

4.Microbial Utilization of Solid Wastes, and

5.Impact of Biotechnology in Crop Production.

The papers provide an up to date account of current trends in applied biological research and highlight the problem areas which still remain to be resolved.

Recent Advances in Biotechnology and Applied Biology will be of interest to research scientists, teachers and students in areas such as microbial bio technology, applied bacteriology, crop production, marine biology and mariculture.
