Time flies. The last batch of the three-year undergraduates are graduating, who were admitted to the university through the Advanced Level Examination. S.H. Ho College organized its Photo Day for the graduands on 10 April. Sharing the joy of the graduands, different participating departments prepared fabulous decorations on the College Lawn and Open Plaza for photo-taking. In addition, 14 SHHO graduands crystallized their College life into installation arts and held their Arts and Photo Exhibition on 13-22 May. Each artwork is a story of dream and persistence.
Dressed in gowns representing their respective faculties, the College’s third cohort of graduands carried bouquets, balloons and graduation toys on the Photo Day to celebrate the significant moment. Master Sun delivered his speech in the ceremony. He hoped that students enjoyed their College life and had built a profound bonding with their family members. He welcomed the graduands to stay in touch and come home for high table dinner. ‘I hope all SHHO graduands uphold the College spirit and will charge into the challenging world with imagination and problem solving mindset. Remember to achieve your highest standard and strive to serve others so that you will lead a successful, fulfilling and happy life, remarked Master Sun.
Jack Chang, a Year 3 Economics major, is the representative of the graduands. Jack reminisced his fully residential and communal dining life. He enjoyed the chit-chat and discussion of College affairs with Master, Dean of Students, Wardens, Resident Tutors and College friends. The moments organizing activities with committee members of the Student Union was unforgettable to him. The golden memories at S.H. Ho College were much treasured. In that sentimental occasion, he quoted Li Bai, a renowned poet in the Tang dynasty, who wrote ‘Journeying is Hard’. He recited a verse ‘Navigating by wind and breaking the waves, I’ll hoist my sail to touch the clouds and cross the deep blue sea’: No matter how rugged the future as it seems, he would uphold the College motto ‘Culture, Morals, Devotion and Trustworthiness’ and overcome challenges ahead with dream and courage.
In ‘We are Graduands’ Arts and Photo Exhibition, all exhibitors followed their own pace to explore their dreams and persistence. While taking graduation photos, each of them held a piece of white paper. The photos taken would be retouched artistically. Louie Cheng’s artwork ‘In Search of Freedom in Constraints’ expressed her reflection in her last year of university life. To Louie, photography was to frame visible objects, but creation was to create infinity with finite objects. Sit Chung Ping reviewed his learning experience and overseas exposure in the past few years, and discovered his present self was shaped by the ups and downs all along. He pasted a shell on his artwork as a self-reminder: To empty oneself like a shell. To enrich oneself before commencing a new journey.
All the participating graduands explored themselves through art and manifested their life uniquely. Some students created ceramics moulding their hands, and engraved the artworks with messages to themselves. Urban dwellers are used to hustle and bustle. Many graduands are busy with dissertations and attending job interviews for future long-term development. Those 14 exhibitors have chosen to prepare their own unique graduation gifts. Life is indeed abundant and multi-faceted.
