Cultural Talk on Heart to Heart: A Journey with Serena Jin and Brigitte Lin
The College held a cultural talk on and book launch of Heart to Heart: A Journey with Serena Jin and Brigitte Lin in Ho Sin Hang Hall on 24 September, 2022. Prof. Serena Jin, Emeritus Professor of Translation, Honorary Fellow of the University and S.H. Ho College talked to her friend, Miss Brigitte Lin, a celebrated actress about Prof. Jin’s new book on their friendship and encounters with distinguished people in the fields of literature and culture. More than 400 guests, students and teachers of the CUHK community, secondary school students and the public attended the event.
Published this May, the book Heart to Heart: A Journey with Serena Jin and Brigitte Lin depicts the memorable friendship of 18 years between Prof. Jin and Miss Lin, and encourages readers to strive for excellence in life journey. It is the first time Prof. Jin and Miss Lin meet with the public since the publication of the book. During the talk, they shared how they maintain their friendship, and how they supported and inspired each other in ups and downs.
At the end of the talk, Prof. Ambrose King, former Vice-Chancellor and Emeritus Professor of Sociology at CUHK, went on stage for remarks. “Prof. Jin and Miss Lin’s book shows us the exquisiteness of language, and their aesthetic hearts in particular. Liu Xie, the author of The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons, compared writing to the art of carving dragons. To write good, we need to have a literary heart and an absolute genuine one. I think Serena’s literary heart has brought Brigitte to life on paper.”
A mini exhibition was also launched on the same day. Handwritten letters, manuscripts, paintings, photography, and portraits of Prof. Jin and Miss Lin are featured. They take readers a step further into the world of the two ladies and to their beautiful hearts as well. Details of the exhibition are as follows.
