Prof. Ian Morley, College member and Associate Professor in the Department of History at CUHK, was elected as Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in March and May 2021 respectively. Prof. Morley’s research interests focus on world history, planning history, urban history, urbanism and urban culture.

The Royal Historical Society, founded in 1868, is the UK’s foremost society working for historians and history. Fellowships are awarded to those who have made an original contribution to historical scholarship, and other works of diffusion and dissemination grounded in historical research.

The Royal Society of Arts, founded in 1754, is one of the influential academic bodies in the UK. Fellowships are awarded to those who have made significant contribution in the areas of arts, manufactures and commerce.

This February, The Chinese University of Hong Kong presented the University Education Award 2020 and the Vice-Chancellor’s Exemplary Teaching Award 2019 in recognition of teachers’ commitment to the promotion of teaching excellence and outstanding teaching performance. Three teachers received the University Education Award while nine were conferred the Vice-Chancellor’s Exemplary Teaching Award. Among the awardees, three of them are members of S.H. Ho College. The details are as follows:

CUHK instituted the University Education Award in 2011-12 to honour teachers for outstanding commitment to the promotion of teaching excellence. Recipients of the award are commended for their contributions to enhancing students’ learning experience through curriculum design/development, for their adoption of learner-centred approaches, and their scholarship in teaching and learning. The selection panel of the University-wide education award comprises the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education), Associate Deans (Education) of the eight Faculties and the Director of University General Education.

The Vice-Chancellor’s Exemplary Teaching Award has been given annually since 1999 by the Vice-Chancellor to exemplary teachers nominated by the Dean of each Faculty and the Senate Committee on General Education in recognition of their outstanding teaching performance.

In addition, Dr. Li Ming Kenneth was also awarded with Exemplary Teaching Award in General Education 2019 in recognition of his contributions this June. Established in 2006, the Exemplary Teaching Award in General Education is launched by the Senate Committee on General Education (SCGE). Nominations are invited from all the GE teachers and undergraduate students. The nominations are reviewed by the SCGE Standing Committee basing on the course design, teaching and learning activities, and tutelage in the General Education courses they offered. The award will be presented by the SCGE to a maximum of three teachers in recognition of exemplary contribution to teaching and learning in General Education. All nominations will be reviewed by the SCGE Standing Committee based on the nominee’s contribution to GE in the past two academic years.

Professor Francis K.L. Chan (Fellow of S.H. Ho College), Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Choh-Ming Li Professor of Medicine and Therapeutics at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has recently received the “International Leadership Award 2018” presented by the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG).  Professor Chan is the first Chinese scholar to receive this Award which was given for his outstanding and substantial contributions to the international gastroenterology community.

Professor Francis Chan received this year’s International Leadership Award from Dr Irving M. PIKE (right), the President of the American College of Gastroenterology, at the Annual Scientific Meeting of the College in October 2018.

Prof. Dennis Lo, SHHO College Member and Director of the Li Ka Shing Institute of Health Sciences and Chairman of the Department of Chemical Pathology at CUHK Medicine, world-renowned for his discovery of the presence of cell-free fetal DNA in maternal plasma, has been working to apply circulating DNA analysis for screening early cancers. Recently, a study led by Prof. Allen Chan and Prof. Dennis Lo is among the ten most “Notable Articles of 2017” selected by a top medical journal, The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM). This is a landmark study on over 20,000 people which demonstrated that plasma Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) DNA analysis is useful for screening early asymptomatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC).

A research team led by Prof. Kam-Bo Wong (SHHO College member), Director and Professor of the School of Life Sciences at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, has recently released its research results which show how a Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) can survive in the human stomach by using a toxic metal, nickel ions, to activate an enzyme that can neutralize gastric acid. This discovery helps the future development of novel drugs against H. pylori infection. The team’s research findings were published on 5 December in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA, a prestigious international scientific journal.

In the evening on 15 January 2017, Prof. Dennis Lo Yuk-ming (Fellow of S.H. Ho College), Associate Dean (Research), Faculty of Medicine and Chairman, Department of Chemical Pathology, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, attended the inaugural Future Science Prize Award Ceremony at the 2017 Future Forum in Beijing. Prof. Lo has been awarded Future Science Prize-Life Science Prize.

In his thank-you speech, Prof. Lo expressed that it was an honour for him to be selected by the Future Science Prize among many outstanding scientists in China. “I have met lots of kind-hearted mentors.” Prof. Lo said, “The testing work of DNA has inspired me endlessly which enables me to take a step further in the research field.”

開創無創產前診斷　中大教授獲獎  (AM730) 

The School of Life Sciences (SLS) at The Chinese University of Hong Kong has entered into a five-year agreement with the University of California at Berkeley’s (UC Berkeley) Departments of Integrative Biology and Molecular & Cell Biology, under which up to five students from CUHK will be sent to enroll in the ‘Berkeley Biosciences Study Abroad (BBSA) Programme’ for a semester every year. The students will also get internship opportunities at the research laboratories of the two departments of UC Berkeley. As an initiative to encourage students to pursue their aspirations in scientific research, the units obtained by the participating students from the BBSA Programme will be recognized as their respective major programme requirements back in CUHK, and the University will also subsidise the students with the tuition fees at UC Berkeley.

Today, Prof. Randy Wayne SCHEKMAN, Professor of Molecular and Cell Biology at UC Berkeley and 2013 Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine, visited CUHK to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Prof. Kam-bo WONG (Dean of Students, S.H. Ho College), Director of SLS at CUHK. Professor Schekman has been in close collaboration with Prof. Liwen JIANG of SLS on research projects about cell proteins under the Area of Excellence (AoE) Scheme, as well as on education and student training.

Prof. Dennis Yuk-ming LO (Fellow of S.H. Ho College) from the Faculty of Medicine at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has been named this year’s ‘Thomson Reuters Citation Laureate – Chemistry’ for his achievement in detecting cell-free fetal DNA in maternal plasma, cited as a revolution in non-invasive prenatal testing.  The honour came two days after he clinched the Future Science Prize – Life Science Prize, seen as China’s Nobel Prize, for the same contribution.  The annual Citation Laureates study, launched by the Intellectual Property and Science arm of Thomson Reuters, identifies the most influential science researchers who are considered as potential winners of the Nobel Prize in the near future.

Prof. Dennis Yuk-ming LO (Fellow of S.H. Ho College) from the Faculty of Medicine at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) received today the Future Science Prize – Life Science Prize for his seminal contribution to the widely-used noninvasive prenatal test based on the original discovery of fetal DNA in maternal blood which has benefited millions of pregnant women globally. The Future Science Prize, seen as the Chinese version of Nobel Prize, was co-founded by a group of scientists and entrepreneurs in mainland China. Awardees are selected by a committee of nine members from different scientific fields for their original and innovative scientific researches which have a long-term international impact and significance.

Prof. Wong Ching-ping (Fellow of S.H. Ho College), Dean of Engineering at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), has been leading a cross-institutional research team to conduct a five-year research project entitled ‘Smart Solar Energy Harvesting, Storage and Utilization’. The research team of CUHK has successfully invented the most efficient supercapacitors and the flow batteries with the highest volumetric capacity reported to date. The inventions can strongly enhance the efficiency of renewable energy storage and transmission and increase the penetration of renewable electricity generation. The research findings on the supercapacitors have been published in Nano Energy. The research findings on the new flow batteries have been published in Nature Communications and Advanced Energy Materials.

CUHK’s Faculty of Medicine announced yesterday the outcome of a large-scale prospective study they conducted earlier, which is the first of its kind globally. They discovered that if patients have ‘high-risk polyps’ (or ‘precancerous adenomas’) in their large intestines, the risk for their immediate siblings of having the same disease is 6 times higher. Prof. Simon Ng Siu-man is an expert in colorectal surgery from the Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, CUHK, and a fellow of S.H. Ho College. He said that since colorectal cancer mainly developed gradually from intestinal polyps (adenomas), if intestinal polyps could be discovered and removed before they transformed to cancerous tumors, the chance of getting colorectal cancer would be lowered effectively.

A group of astrophysicists at CUHK led by Prof. Hua-bai Li (SHHO Member) of the Department of Physics has found that the magnetic field plays a significant role in the formation of massive stars.Professor Li and his team examined the role B-field plays in the formation of massive stars. They chose to focus on NGC6334, also known as the Cat’s Paw Nebula, because the gas in this region has a total mass 200,000 times that of our sun and is a fertile ground for massive stars to sprout. Also, while its distance from the Earth is a staggering 5,500 lightyears away, in astronomical terms it is close enough for valid observations to be made. Please click here for details.

National People’s Congress Standing Committee Chairman Zhang Dejiang visited the Science Park on May 18 to learn about Hong Kong’s innovation and technology work. Accompanied by Chief Executive CY Leung, he was briefed by Secretary for Innovation & Technology Nicholas Yang on the city’s entrepreneurship and innovation development, the Government’s inno-tech policy, the work of major support institutions, cross-boundary co-operation and Hong Kong’s role as a super-connector.

Founders of five local start-up companies which have excelled in different technology areas presented and demonstrated their products, including Rex Sham, who developed wildfire detection robots; Xu Li, who is dedicated to developing original technologies in computer vision and deep learning; Prof Dennis Lo, a pioneer in genomics technology and inventor of non-invasive prenatal test technologies, and a fellow of S.H. Ho College, CUHK; Alan Lee, who developed a multi-functional electronic wheelchair; and, Prof Ronald Li, who developed bio-artificial human hearts for use in drug discovery and testing.

Aspirin is currently the most commonly used drug to prevent recurrence of Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) or minor stroke . However there has been concern about the associated risk of hemorrhagic events, such as bleeding in the brain and gut. A global study jointly led by The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and neurology centres from over 30 countries has revealed that another antiplatelet agent ‘ticagrelor’ could potentially be an alternative drug to prevent recurrent stroke. Ticagrelor is found to be more effective than aspirin in preventing ischemic stroke. It can reduce the risk of recurrence by 13%. The findings were presented this month at the European Stroke Organization annual meeting in Barcelona and were published in a leading international journal, The New England Journal of Medicine.

Prof. Lawrence Ka Sing WONG, Mok Hing Yiu Professor of Medicine, Head of Division of Neurology, Department of Medicine and Therapeutics CUHK and Member of S.H. Ho College added, ‘The benefits of ticagrelor over aspirin were more obvious in four groups of patients. The first group was of patients who were already taking aspirin when they developed a stroke or TIA, meaning that aspirin might not be strong enough to inhibit platelet aggregation in this special group of patients. Other groups that showed benefits included those patients who were treated early within 12 hours of the onset of symptoms, aged below 65 and Asians.’

Prof. Edward Ng is a Professor of Architecture in the School of Architecture and a member of S.H. Ho College. He is the first incumbent of the Yao Ling Sun Endowed Chair in Architecture. Prof. Ng has involved himself in humanitarian work since his study in 1980s. Professor Ng manages his professional skills as an architect to improve the life of rural and poor Chinese.Adopted the idea in delivering love and care to enable the sustainable development of poverty-sticken and disadvantaged areas, the “Wu Zhi Qiao” Charitable Foundation has developed into an inter-university cooperation initiative of Hong Kong and the ainland university students. It has mobilized over 330 volunteers and completed 11 bridge projects in Shanxi, Sichuan, Gansu, Guizhou and Yunnan etc, benefiting over ten thousands villagers since its inauguration in 2007 under the leadership of Professor Ng. Besides the bridge building project, Professor Ng helped the affected people in 5.12 Sichuan Earthquake 2008 rebuilding houses ruined during the earthquake and built a safe pedestrian crossing in place of the traditional but unstable one as the only way of reaching the outside world. It has been eight years since the natural hazard occurred. A press interviewed him on the rebuilding project in Sichuan.

Prof. Dennis Lo, Fellow of S.H. Ho College, is the Director of the Li Ka Shing Institute of Health Sciences, the Li Ka Shing Professor of Medicine and Professor of Chemical Pathology, CUHK. He discovered the presence of cell-free fetal DNA in the plasma of pregnant women in 1997. After more than a decade of research, he introduced a non-invasive prenatal diagnosis for Down syndrome in 2011. The technology is now widely used in numerous countries in Asia, Europe and America. It is estimated that this new technology will be adopted by public hospitals in Hong Kong in two years. Recently, Professor Lo and his research team have achieved another major breakthrough in applying DNA sequencing techniques to cancer detection, contributing towards early stage cancer diagnosis and hence prompt treatment. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of irreversible central vision loss in elderly. A recent study by The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has discovered a protein called Angiopoietin2 that correlates with the severity of Wet AMD. Scientists from the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences of CUHK have found that the level of Angiopoietin2 is significantly elevated inside the eyes of patients with Wet AMD as compared to normal people and that it correlates with vision loss and macular swelling. Dr. Mårten Erik BRELÉN, Assistant Professor, Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Director of CUHK Pao So Kok Macular Disease Treatment and Research Centre said, ‘We believe the study can lead us to further our work in clinical genetics, to help us identify specific gene variants within the angiopoietin gene that increase the risk of developing Wet AMD.’ Dr. BRELÉN is a member of S.H. Ho College.

Prof. Lawrence Wong, Mok Hing Yiu Chair Professor of Medicine, Head of Division of Neurology, Department of Medicine and Therapeutics at CUHK, remarked, ‘If we can see patients sooner, evaluate the cause of the TIA/minor stroke and start appropriate treatments, preferably within 12-24 hours, the rate of stroke can be much reduced.’ The usual treatment consists of antiplatelet drugs, statin and antihypertensive agents. Brain scan, imaging of the vessels to the brain and electrocardiogram (ECG) are important investigations, which help doctors to choose specific treatments for the underlying conditions. Prof. Wong is also a member of S.H. Ho College.

This spring, 40 students of the General Education Foundation Course ‘In Dialogue with Nature’ had the rare opportunity to experience nature’s awakening via toiling with the earth—as partial fulfilment of their coursework. Commonly taken by Year 1 and 2 students, this course traditionally features a ‘participation’ scheme that awards students for participating in online discussion forums. This semester, Dr. Kenneth Li (SHHO member), one of the lecturers of the course, offered a new option to his class  to participate in three sessions of hands-on vegetable planting on the rooftop of Hui Yeung Shing Building instead. The new option, offered as a trial, proved so popular that students had to draw lots to get in. Please click here to peruse the news.

Under the leadership of Prof. Wong Ching-ping, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at CUHK and Fellow of S.H. Ho College, the University has become a ground-breaking institution in terms of its work on renewable energy. Since 2014, it has won substantial backing to fund research that it is leading on that front.The Hong Kong government has awarded a grant of HK$60.33 million (US$7.8 million) in funding. CUHK is contributing another HK$13.8 million, with the other universities involved adding another HK$3 million. CUHK is cooperating with Hong Kong Polytechnic University, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and The University of Hong Kong in the work. In the 2013/14 exercise of the Theme-based Research Scheme by the University Grants Committee, only three projects were funded. So what is the weight of expectation? “Heavy,” Professor Wong says. “We have to make sure the money is well spent and we get something out of it.” Professor Wong, who also holds a post in CUHK’s Department of Electronic Engineering, knows very well how to produce results. He spent 19 years with AT&T Bell Labs and 15 years with Georgia Tech before joining CUHK, focusing on semiconductor packaging. He had already been, as a graduate student, the first person to synthesize the first known lanthanide porphryn, a heavy-metal element porphryn complex, which has properties that appear to help combat cancer. At CUHK, he has been working with Prof. Zhao Ni, also in CUHK’s Electronic Engineering Department, as well as their team of students and post-doctoral collaborators, on asymmetric super-capacitors. Those are vital for the storage of green energy, since solar and wind power are intermittent. “You want that power for the evening,” Professor Wong notes. The research team that Professors Wong and Zhao lead has developed nanostructured metal oxide-carbon composites for asymmetric super-capacitors that exhibit high energy and power densities of 98.0 W h kg-1 and 22,826 W kg-1. Super-capacitors have great power density but low energy density, while a battery has low power density but high energy density. When secondary-school students learning English in Hong Kong get back their assignments from their teachers, they sometimes find themselves staring at a sea of red ink. Their instructors feel an obligation to mark up every single mistake, just as their own work was graded when they grew up. But they are doing their students and even themselves a disservice, according to the research of Prof. Icy Lee, the chair of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at CUHK and a member of S.H. Ho College. They burden their charges with a host of changes that they don’t always understand – and they burden themselves with hours of unproductive grading, a task that many say is their least-favourite aspect of teaching. Lingnan Chinese Painting could be traced to two progenitors in Qing dynasty, the cousins Ju Chao and Ju Lian. Gao Jianfu, Gao Qifeng, and Chen Shuren were their most famous followers, becoming known as the ‘Three Masters of Lingnan’. Prof. Ng Yuet-lau, a closed disciple of Chao Shaoang who was under tutelage of Gao Qifeng, has been assiduous in promoting the Lingnan painting. The Lingnan School focuses on sketching in nature, where different objects found could be artistic themes. Bright colours adopted in Lingnan painting have marked a watershed from other Chinese painting schools. The ‘Lingnan Images—Paintings by Prof. Ng Yuet-lau and Prof. Philip Chiu’ held at S.H. Ho College, CUHK is the first location of the Lingnan masters’ roving exhibition. The artworks, altogether more than 50 pieces, range from their representative Chinese paintings, paintings of Ling Ngai Association members, to the works by students of S.H. Ho College and Christian Zheng Sheng College. The themes cover landscapes, flowers and birds, as well as local customs and humanity aspects. Having appreciated the refined artworks, visitors would have an overall impression of the multi-faceted dimensions of Lingnan Art. Prof. Ng Yuet-lau is an Honorary Fellow of S.H. Ho College, CUHK.

Lingnan School Painting Exhibition (CUHK Newsletter) 

World War II catalysed migration of much Chinese population, and such displacement has evolved into issues like identity and sense of belonging. After more than a decade of research, he introduced a non-invasive prenatal diagnosis for Down syndrome in 2011. The technology is now widely used in numerous countries in Asia, Europe and America. It is estimated that this new technology will be adopted by public hospitals in Hong Kong in two years. Prof. Wong Ching-ping, Dean of CUHK Faculty of Engineering, is a Fellow of S.H. Ho College. Prof. Wong is a world-renowned scholar in electronic and material engineering. He was elected one of the Founding Academicians of The Academy of Science of Hong Kong on 6 December 2016. Prof. Serena Jin mentioned that translation was like mountain climbing, and mastery of one’s mother tongue was its foundation. Emeritus Professor of Translation at CUHK, Prof. Jin has dedicated herself to a lifelong career of teaching and of promoting translation. She has published over 20 books and more than 100 theses and articles; served as a member of the Bilingual Laws Advisory Committee, and was awarded the OBE in 1997. Joining CUHK in 1965, Professor Jin played a pivotal role in the development of the Department of Translation. Prof. Jin is also an Honorary Fellow at S.H. Ho College. Prof. Wong Chine-ping, Dean of CUHK Faculty of Engineering, is a Fellow of S.H. Ho College. Prof. Wong is a world-renowned scholar in electronic and material engineering, a member of the US National Academy of Engineering, Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and a foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) in recognition of his remarkable contributions in the field of electronic engineering. Widely recognized as an academic giant, Professor Wong’s research interests lie in the fields of polymeric electronic materials, electronic, photonic and MEMS packaging and interconnect, interfacial adhesions, and nano-functional material syntheses and characterizations.  He is considered an industry legend and has made significant contributions to the industry by pioneering new materials, which fundamentally changed the semiconductor packaging technology. On 6 December 2015, he was elected one of the Founding Academicians of The Academy of Science of Hong Kong. He was interviewed by local newspapers about his dedication in pushing the frontier of innovation in Hong Kong on 7 December.

Prof. Liu Mingkang, Honorary Fellow of S.H. Ho College, is a renowned financial expert and former Chairman of the China Banking Regulatory Commission. Hewas conferred an honorary doctorate degree for his distinguished accomplishment in the financial sector. He is currently Honorary Dean of the Lingnan College at Sun Yat-sen University, Senior Fellow of the Hong Kong Institute of Bankers, BCT Distinguished Research Fellow of the Institute of Global Economics and Finance, and Honorary Professor of the Faculty of Business Administration at CUHK.  Professor Liu is a problem-solving expert on the Chinese banking system, and was appointed to key positions in many banks and government departments.  In 2003, Professor Liu was appointed as the first chairman of the China Banking Regulatory Commission, to regulate China’s troubled banking industry. Pushing forward a comprehensive reform of the state-owned banking sector, he managed to improve the provision coverage ratio, strike a balance between innovation and regulation, significantly reduce the proportion of non-performing loans, and build a stronger regulatory system.  He was honoured with a Risk Manager of the Year award by the Global Association of Risk Professionals, and a Lifetime Achievement Award by The Asian Banker magazine.  The University conferred upon Professor Liu the degree of Doctor of Social Science, honoris causa, in recognition of his significant contributions to the banking industry.

Research by The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) between 2011 and 2013 has proved that a personalised lifestyle modification programme with a dietary approach is effective in reducing the severity of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). 

Prof. David S.C. Hui, Stanley Ho Professor of Respiratory Medicine, Department of Medicine and Therapeutics at CUHK, stated, ‘Besides having a small chin, smoking, using alcohol and hypnotics, and being male, obesity is also an important risk factor of OSA.’ The prevalence of OSA tends to increase with obesity, as observed in western countries. Asia’s First Research by CUHK on Patients’ Lifestyle Reveals Personalised Modification Programme Effective in Reducing Severity of OSA (Education Post)

Prof. Leung Wai Hong Thomas, Lee Quo Wei Associate Professor of Neurology, Department of Medicine and Therapeutics, CUHK, is a member of S.H. Ho College. He explained a better control of 3Hs (High Blood Sugar, High Cholesterol and Hypertension help reduce the recurrence rate of stroke in an interview. Prof. Leung recommended citizens need to control the 3Hs from their middle age by regular exercise for half an hour per day and self-discipline in diet. 

Prof. Leung previously received the State Natural Science Award (SNSA) second-class award for the research project he participated in: ‘The New Discovery of Cerebral Infarction Arterial Characteristics and a New Strategy of Revascularization’.

You are now just at the start of being a caring physician and a humble learner. No matter how hard you try to practice your skill and your knowledge of the advanced medicine technology, it will not be enough. The Consumer Council released a test report on 15 September that most seasonings contain high levels of sodium while some have too much sugar, based on their test conducted on 65 samples of chicken powder, fish powder, fish sauce and soy sauce.

Prof. Francis Chan, Dean of Medicine, CUHK, is a member of S.H. Ho College’s Assembly of Fellows. He pinpointed in an interview that people over 50-year old should regularly conduct health check to ensure their gastrointestinal health. Stool test is a way to detect if there is any hemoglobin presents in stools, so even tiny amount of blood in stool can be found.

Prof. Kalok Chan is a member of S.H. Ho College’s Assembly of Fellows. 28 years ago, he was an Economics major at CUHK. Now he has returned to the mountainous campus as Dean of CUHK Business School and Wei Lun Professor of Finance. 

“It’s been great coming back to my alma mater. There’s quite a lot of differences but some of the heritage and culture are still the same,” says Chan. “More importantly, I see that CUHK and the Business School really have a lot of interesting developments and quite a lot of potential.”

The Chinese University of Hong Kong has appointed Prof. Wong Kam-bo as Director of the School of Life Sciences with effect from 1 August 2015. Prof. Wong has significant research achievements which include showing how Helicobacter pylori, causing peptic ulcers and stomach cancer, has managed to survive in the acidic environment of the human gut. This discovery shed light to the design of new drugs to blunt H. pylori’s impact on human body. He is a member of the College’s Assembly of Fellows. As the Dean of Students of the College since 2011, Prof. Wong has been steering the College’s student affairs and helping students to grow in a home-like community.

Prof. Dennis Y.M. Lo, Director of the Li Ka Shing Institute of Health Sciences, Li Ka Shing Professor of Medicine and Professor of Chemical Pathology of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), has been honoured with the 2015 Wallace H. Coulter Lectureship Award. He is also a member of S.H. Ho College’s Assembly of Fellows. Professor Lo remarked, ‘I feel most honoured in being selected for this prestigious award. I would strive to work to further push forward the field, and to create new tests that are more accurate and robust for serving the needs of patients.’

Prof. Francis Chan, Dean of Medicine, is a member of the College’s Assembly of Fellows. He and two medical students shared tips of admission to the medical school of CUHK on 30 June. They introduced the school’s elite programme Global Physician-Leadership Stream from which its students enjoy an array of benefits including one-to-one academic mentorship and exposure to internationally renowned institutions including the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge. 陳家樂培養學生跨科才能 回歸中大 改革商學院 

去年在科大商學院工作十八年的陳家樂教授，「回歸」母校中大擔任商學院院長，統領一百多名教職員和四千多個學生。新官上任半年，他已滿腹大計，希望協助母校商學院更上一層樓。他覺得香港社會重視商業，但未來社會對企業責任、創新和領導能力有更大需求，會注重培養學生跨學科的才能，更會擴闊學生視野，讓學生更有發展空間。記者 勞顯亮

從科大商學院署理院長，回歸母校擔任商學院院長，陳家樂上任的首要任務，就是要應付學院教授的退休潮，計畫未來三十五年招聘的教授，佔現時人手的四分之一。「我們會努力在全球招聘，除了要填補教授退休的空缺，更要適應未來十年的市場和社會變化，為學生做好準備。有幾個方面我希望加強，如企業社會責任、領導能力和創新，這些並非像會計、金融那樣是一個特定專業，但都是社會有很大需求和訴求的範疇。」

上任先應付退休潮

招聘計畫已逐步落實，今年九月新學年，中大商學院就有十四位新教授加盟，還有多位講師，當中不乏資深和有分量的學者，會兼顧教學和研究，「有一位教授是市場學、醫療和心理學跨學科。」

香港是國際金融中心，但近年面對內地和東南亞其他城市急起直追的挑戰，經濟轉型亦令香港的競爭力受到挑戰，陳家樂覺得「創新」將成為香港成功的關鍵，「香港向來是一個重視商業的社會，土地不足亦窒礙了香港部分產業的發展，所以更應該重創新，繼續發揮香港的優勢。商學院的學生未必熟悉科研，但要了解科技是怎樣一回事，會通過不同的跨學科合作，將科技與商業元素結合，讓學生涉獵不同的範疇，做好『全人教育』。」

社會責任同樣重要

現時中大商學院與工程學系、新聞及傳播學系，均有開設雙學位的本科課程，學生修讀五年，就可以拿到兩個學位，亦與理學院辦計量金融學及風險管理的四年制課程，與社科院合作環球經濟和金融學士的課程。以往本港的狀元，最愛選擇法律和醫學院，但前年中大商學院的環球商業學本科課程，就成為DSE收生最高分的學科。陳家樂不覺得學生選擇商科功利，但會注重培養學生對社會的責任和道德。

陳家樂亦注重學生的國際視野，會爭取六成商學院的學生到海外交流，「如我們的環球商業學本科課程，與美國北卡羅來納州大學商學院（UNC）和丹麥哥本哈根商學院（CBS）合作，三所大學的學生有一年半的時間，在三個不同地方一齊學習，不只是做一個學期的交換生，而是一同生活，學生完成計畫後，可以與外國的同學保持緊密聯繫。還有與美國哥倫比亞大學合辦的國際貿易與中國企業課程，中大的學生將會有一年至一年半的時間與哥倫比亞大學的學生相處，要求學生深入學習中國市場。」

不看重課程排名

提起商學院，外界最喜歡用商學院MBA（工商管理碩士）和EMBA（行政人員工商管理碩士）課程的排名作比較，前年國際知名的芝加哥大學布斯商學院（Chigago Booth）宣布進軍香港開設分校，而科大的Kellogg-HKUST EMBA課程就曾六度位列全球一哥，陳家樂直言並不看重排名高低，而是重視課程是否適合學生。「中大商學院是亞洲第一所開辦MBA和EMBA課程的商學院，明年就是MBA課程五十周年，校友網絡很龐大，我們會善用這些優勢。我們MBA與清華大學和上海國家會計學院合作的項目，一直很出色。EMBA課程則與港大、科大跟外國大學合辦不同，一直獨辦，一直做得好好，亦一直檢視課程的更新。」

他透露不少醫生、工程師都有修讀中大的MBA課程，「每個行業都需要管理人才，都需要有融資、會計、風險管理、市場推廣的知識，這些都是中大商學院可以提供的。」

如願在「百萬大道」參加畢業禮

從中大畢業二十多年後強勢「回歸」擔任商學院院長，陳家樂直言校園變化不少，新樓、新工程很多，商學院亦位處港鐵大學站外的鄭裕彤樓，陳家樂亦毋須再「上山」返學，「其實回來後一直很忙，我還未有機會回去以前讀書時的聯合書院看看。」

不過回到中大，陳家樂也補償了一個二十多年前的遺憾。原來當年陳家樂在中大畢業後，就馬上到了美國俄亥俄州大學讀書，錯過了十一月舉行的畢業禮，「去年十一月上任剛好就是畢業禮的時間，我終於在二十多年後，在中大的百萬大道『完成』畢業禮，雖然是穿上教授袍而不是學士袍。」

CUHK received eight Higher Education Outstanding Scientific Research Output Awards (Science and Technology) from the Ministry of Education in 2014, including two first-class awards and five second-class awards in natural sciences, as well as one first-class award in scientific and technological progress, again making it the institution receiving the highest number of awards in the local tertiary sector.

2015.06.04 CUHK Receives Eight Outstanding Scientific Research Output Awards 

Prof. Thomas Leung (on left, SHHO member), Lee Quo Wei Associate Professor of Neurology, and Dr. Yannie Soo, Clinical Assistant Professor (Honorary), from the Department of Medicine and Therapeutics at CUHK advocate a stringent control of cardiovascular risk factor to reopen narrowed brain arteries. By the end of the first year of the study, the high-grade arterial stenosis either remained quiescent or remarkably regressed in over 90% of the participants.

S.H. Ho College is pleased to annouce that Mr. Thomas C.B. Liang, Overseer of the College, has been elected a member of the CUHK Council. In accordance with Statute 11.1(m), 11.4 and 11.5 of The Chinese University of Hong Kong Ordinance, Mr. Thomas C.B. Liang has succeeded Mr. Johnson M.D. Cha whose period of membership expired on 14 April 2015, as proposed by the Vice-Chancellor.

Professor Dennis Lo Yuk Ming from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), Fellow of S.H. Ho College, was presented with the Pioneer Award at the Personalized Medicine World Conference 2015, for his pioneering research and remarkable contributions to personalized medicine.

Professor Dennis Lo Yuk Ming, Associate Dean (Research); Chairman of the Department of Chemical Pathology, Faculty of Medicine; and Director of the Li Ka Shing Institute of Health Sciences at CUHK, was the first to discover the presence of cell-free fetal DNA in the plasma of pregnant women. The groundbreaking findings opened up opportunities for non-invasive prenatal testing. Recently, Professor Lo and his research team have achieved another major breakthrough in applying DNA sequencing techniques to cancer detection. This innovative liquid biopsy technology aims to detect cancer-associated mutations and other alterations in blood through genome-wide DNA sequencing, contributing towards early stage cancer diagnosis and hence prompt treatment.

Professor Lo remarked, ‘Given the rapid development of genomics technology, personalized medicine is being a global development in healthcare. I would like to thank my research team and collaborators for their strong support over the years. We will further push forward the technology envelope to provide safe and timely diagnostic solutions for prenatal diagnosis and cancer detection.’

Professor Lo discovered the presence of cell-free fetal DNA in the plasma of pregnant women in 1997. The remarkable findings marked a milestone in genetic medicine. Professor Lo then characterized the fundamental parameters of this phenomenon and developed a number of core technologies that brought non-invasive prenatal diagnosis into reality. In 2011, he introduced a non-invasive prenatal diagnosis for Down syndrome with over 99% accuracy. Pregnant women are only required to take a blood test after 10 weeks of pregnancy, greatly reducing the risk of miscarriage compared to conventional invasive testing methods such as amniocentesis. The technology is now widely used in China, the United States, Europe, totalling over 60 countries, representing one of the most rapidly developing areas of molecular testing. To date, it has been estimated that over a million pregnant women have benefited from this technology.

Professor Lo’s innovative and remarkable research in non-invasive prenatal testing has had a far-reaching impact in the medical and scientific fields. Over the years, he has been honoured with numerous international awards including the King Faisal International Prize for Medicine in 2014, election to the Royal Society and election as a Foreign Associate of the US National Academy of Sciences.

What is Personalized Medicine?

The human genome contains approximately 6 billion DNA bases (with half inherited from each parent) which have a great impact on our health including genomic alterations that would lead to cancer, adverse reactions to drugs, and susceptibility to diseases, etc. Personalized medicine enables physicians to provide patients with customised monitoring and treatment solutions based on their unique situations reflected from DNA sequencing. Such developments allow the timely institution of the most beneficial management plans for a particular patient.

About The Personalized Medicine World Conference and the Pioneer Award

The Personalized Medicine World Conference is an annual event where personalized medicine experts around the world share their innovative researches and insights on future development. The Pioneer Award is given to a rare individual who has presaged the present day excitement regarding personalized medicine with major advances in the field, even at a time when less-evolved technology and less encouragement from peers existed. Last year’s recipient of the award was Prof. Yuet Wai Kan, renowned expert and leader in genetics research. Professor Lo was presented with the award at the conference recently held in Silicon Valley.

Prof. Wallace Mok (4th right, front row) of the Department of Economics, together with two teachers in the Faculty of Social Science, was honoured with the Faculty’s Exemplary Teaching Award 2013 on 8 March 2014. Mr. K.K. Ling (4th left, front row), Director of Planning of the HKSAR Government, was the guest of honour of the ceremony. On the same occasion, certificates were presented to students of the Faculty who made the Dean’s List for excellent academic achievements. Professor Mok has been offering advice in the College’s Admissions Sub-Committee.

“By carefully sequencing the maternal plasma DNA, Professor Lo’s team has been able to reveal the genome-wide genetic and mutational profile of the fetus. Their findings were published as the cover story in the prestigious interdisciplinary biomedical journal, Science Translational Medicine. The implication of this ground-breaking research is that by analysing a blood sample from the pregnant woman the entire genome of the fetus can be deduced and screened for many possible genetic disorders in one go.”

Professor Angela Shik has been appointed Honourary Student Counsellor of the College. On 12 February 2014, she received the appointment certificate from Master Sun at the High Table Dinner.

In the capacity, Professor Shik will develop pastoral care and counselling, formal and whole-person education of the College so as to create a congenial and homely environment for the students. Professor Shik joined S.H.HoCollege in 2009 and served as the Associate Dean of General Education of the College until she parted the University in 2013. Throughout the years serving at the College, she took an active part in developing the innovative College General Education programmes which incorporate experiential learning, self-reflection, and group performance. She was also instrumental in offering counseling and mental health promotion programmes for students.

Prof. Dennis Lo Yuk-ming, Director of the Li Ka Shing Institute of Health Sciences, Li Ka Shing Professor of Medicine and Chairman of the Department of Chemical Pathology at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), has won the 2014 King Faisal International Prize for Medicine for his outstanding achievements in the research on non-invasive prenatal diagnosis.  Professor Lo is the second CUHK scholar being awarded the prestigious award after Prof. Yang Chen-ning, Nobel Laureate in Physics and Distinguished Professor-at-Large of CUHK. 

Prof. Dennis Lo Yuk-ming, Director of the Li Ka Shing Institute of Health Sciences at CUHK and Fellow o S. H. Ho College, has just been elected as Foreign Associate of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) of the United States of America. Founded in 1863, the NAS is one of the world’s premier learned societies. Election to the NAS is a widely accepted indicator of scientific excellence and is considered one of the highest honours that a scientist can receive. In the current election, 84 new members and 21 foreign associates from 14 countries were elected.

Prof. C.P. Wong is the recipient of the Dresden Barkhausen Award 2012. The award was internationally established in 2006. It is a joint award by Fraunhofer Association and Technical University of Dresden which is prone to applied in materials and electronics.

College member Dr. Chiu Chi Ming, School of Life Sciences, has been awarded the Exemplary Teaching Award in General Education 2012. The Award is presented to commend teachers with outstanding contribution to teaching and learning in general education. 

Prof. Dennis Lo Yuk-ming, Li Ka Shing Professor of Medicine and Chairman of the Department of Chemical Pathology at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and Fellow of SHHO College, has received the AACC-NACB Award for Outstanding Contributions to Clinical Chemistry in a Selected Area of Research from the American Association for Clinical Chemistry (AACC) and the National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry (NACB) for his ground-breaking work in non-invasive prenatal diagnosis. The award recognizes the pioneering efforts of experts at the forefront of their fields. Amongst previous award winners included two Nobel laureates. Professor Lo is the first ever Chinese to receive the honour.

Prof. Dennis Lo Yuk-ming, Li Ka Shing Professor of Medicine and Chairman of the Department of Chemical Pathology at CUHK and Fellow of S.H. Ho College has won the 2012 Ernesto Illy Trieste Science Prize for his work on non-invasive prenatal diagnosis. Prof. Lo received the prize from China’s President Hu Jintao at the 12th General Conference of the World Academy of Sciences for the Advancement of Science in Developing Countries (TWAS) and 23rd General Meeting hosted by the Chinese Academy of Sciences held in Tianjin. Professor Lo is the first Hong Kong scholar ever to receive the honour.

The Council of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has approved the appointment of Prof. Fok Tai-fai as a Pro-Vice-Chancellor for two years, from 1 January 2013. Professor Fok is appointed in succession to Prof. Jack Chun-yiu Cheng who will continue to be Professor of Orthopaedics and Traumatology. The University Council is deeply grateful to Professor Cheng for his dedicated service and exceptional contributions in the last decade as Pro-Vice-Chancellor. Professor Fok will join Provost Prof. Benjamin W. Wah and Pro-Vice-Chancellors Prof. Ching Pak-chung, Prof. Michael King-man Hui, Prof. Henry Nai-ching Wong, Prof. Xu Yangsheng and Prof. Hau Kit-tai in assisting the Vice-Chancellor in the governance of the University.
