2018. 09. 24In Memory of Prof. Sir Charles K. Kao (1933-2018)
All of us in the Department of Information Engineering have learned with sorrow that our respected and beloved Professor Charles Kao has left us. Professor Kao was a mentor and friend of the Department. He will be sorely missed.
Professor Charles Kao is internationally known as the “Father of Fibre Optic Communications”. He pioneered the research and was involved in the subsequent developments of optical fibre communication transmission systems. Optical fibre now serves as the fixed transmission backbone of all major communication trunk routes that lead to the birth of giant ICT companies, like Baidu, Cisco, Facebook, Google and Huawei.
One of the major impacts Professor Kao had in CUHK was his contribution towards the establishment of the Faculty of Engineering and the Department of Information Engineering in the late 1980’s, with his visionary anticipation of the information age. Charles was instrumental in attracting many world-class researchers from Bellcore, Bell Labs, IBM Research, and other renowned research institutions to CUHK. Continuous developments and enhancements saw the Department of Information Engineering become a renowned place for top quality research in ICT (http://www.ie.cuhk.edu.hk/lnews/15-07-03.shtml).
Today, we recognize the exceptional and valuable contribution Charles has made to the Department, the University and the World. He will always remain in the our hearts.
