Mr. Ji Pengfei pictured with members of the University in front of the University Library Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Kent, accompanied by the Vice-Chancellor, touring the campus Engineering, University College, London University, visited the Departments of Biology and Biochemistry of this University as Kan Tong-Po Visiting Professor in January and February 1986. Professor Clarke, formerly Professor of Microbial Biochemistry at the University College, London University, is an international authority on the biochemistry and genetics of Pseudomonas, and on biotechnological application of microbial systems. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society and was the Vice- President of the Society for 1981-82. During her stay at this University, Professor Clarke assessed the programmes of the Departments of Biology and Biochemistry and helped to promote teaching and research in Biotechnology. Sh e also advised the two Departments on possible developments of Biotechnology in relation to Hong Kong. Mr. Ji Pengfei and Mr. Lu Ping Visited the University Mr. Ji Pengfei, China's State Councillor and Director of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office, visited the University on 15th December, 1985. He was accompanied by Mr. Li Hou, Deputy Director of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office, and Mr. Xu Jiatun, Director of the local branch of the Xinhua News Agency. Mr. Ji's party of twenty-one was greeted on arrival by the Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Ma L i n, the two Pro-Vice-Chancellors, Professors G.H. Choa and Baysung Hsu, and the University Secretary , Dr. F.C. Chen. During the visit, Mr. Ji was briefed o n the latest educational developments in Hong Kong and recent projects of the University. They also toured the campus, making stops at the three Colleges. Mr. Lu Ping, Secretary-General of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office, also paid a visit to the University on 17th January, 1986. The visit lasted three hours and a forty-minute discussion session, chaired by the Vice-Chancellor, was held at the Cho Yiu Conference Hall. During the discussion, staff of the University aired their views on various issues related to the drafting of the Basic Law. The University Received Duchess of Kent The University received Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Kent, who was visiting Hong Kong, on 3rd February, 1986. The Duchess was greeted on arrival by the Chairman of the University Council, Dr. the Hon. Q.W. Lee, and the Vice-Chancellor. After viewing a slide presentation, the Duchess visited the Art Gallery. She was accompanied b y the Secretary for Education and Manpower, the Hon. J.N. Henderson, during the visit. Obituary * The Hon. Sir Sik-nin Chau passed away on 30th November, 1985 at the age of eighty-three. Sir Sik-nin was a member of the Advisory Boar d of the Two-Year MBA Programme of the University. * Mr. Shum Wai-yau passed away on 19th December, 1985 at the age of eighty-nine. Mr. Shum had been a member of the New Asia College Board of Trustees since 1959. NEWS 9
