Biography
Dr. Yek obtained her Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Gerontology from the Department of Social Work and Social Administration, The University of Hong Kong. Her thesis was to study the efficacy of evidence-based Individual Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (iCST) for people with dementia and their caregivers. Dr. Yek is a registered social worker who specializes in gerontological social work. She is also an Associate Fellow in Hong Kong Psychological Counselling Association and Accredited Assessor of Residential Aged Care Accreditation Scheme in Hong Kong Association of Gerontology. During her PhD study, Dr. Yek received an HKU COA JMK Dementia Care Scholarship on her dementia research study. She also obtained poster prize presentation award, top ten outstanding poster award and top ten young investigator award in local and overseas conferences.
Prior to joining JCSPHPC, Dr. Yek practised in The Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong as a social worker, carrying out elderly and family caregiver support projects. Dr. Yek has extensive teaching and research experiences in teaching gerontological as well as social work programme in The Nethersole School of Nursing, and School of Continuing and Professional Studies in The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Dr. Yek is currently a Lecturer in the School responsible for teaching in Bachelor of Science in Gerontology Programme.
She also involved in research projects around enhancement of infrastructure of long-term care (LTC) policy in Hong Kong, family-based intervention programme for caregivers of stroke, cultural adaption of cognitive stimulation therapy (CST) for people with dementia and individual cognitive stimulation therapy (iCST).
