has been nominated by the Senate to serve as a member of the Hong Kong Examinations Authority for the unexpired term of office of Dr. P.W. Liu until 31st July, 1986. Professorial Inaugural Lecture Professor Y.W. Lam, Professor of Electronics, delivered his Inaugural Lecture, 'Semiconductor Devices — the Heart of Modern Electronics', on 21st February, 1986. Dr. Li Shu Pui Scholarship In commemoration of the Golden Wedding Anniversary of Dr. and Mrs. Li Shu Pui in 1986 , an endowment fund of HK$ 132,000 has been donated by friends of Dr. and Mrs. Li for the establishment of a ‘Dr. Li Shu Pui Scholarship' at the University. The Scholarship will be awarded annually to an academically outstanding student of the Part-time Degree Programmes from 1986-87. Mrs. Li has been associated with the University since its establishment in 1963 when she was appointed a member of the University Council. She served on the Council until 1977 and has continued to lend her support to the University. Mrs. Li is presently a member of the University's Distinctive Marks and Ceremonial Dress Committee. CCAS Received Support from Beijing-Hong Kong Academic Exchange Centre The Centre for Contemporary Asian Studies (CCAS) recently received two donations from the Beijing- Hong Kong Academic Exchange Centre. A donation of HK$ 110,000 from the Beijing- Hong Kong Academic Exchange Centre was presented to the Centre Director, Professor Yeung Yue-man, on 19th December, 1985 for the establishment of a Special Economic Zones (SEZs) Data and Research Unit within the CCAS. The Unit will, on the one hand, glean and store information on certain aspects of the SEZs for the use of researchers within and without the University, and on the other, facilitate academic exchange among scholars in the field. Another brief ceremony was held on 14th February, at which a cheque for HK$55,000 was presented to Dr. K.S. Liao, Acting Director of the Centre, as the first year's research fund for a joint project by the CCAS and the Beijing Institute of Information Control. This long-term project, which attempts to make a quantitative analysis of the development of China's economy, will provide some useful reference for the decision-making bodies i n China. The Beijing - Hong Kong Academic Exchange Centre is a non-profit-making organization established for the promotion of academic and technical exchange and cooperation between Hong Kong and the Mainland. It is supported by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing. Affiliation Agreement with Boston School of Medicine An Affiliation Agreement has been reached between the Faculty of Medicine of this University and the School of Medicine of Boston University to facilitate the exchange of administrators, teachers, physicians, scientists and students, so as to set up a close link and promote mutual understanding between the two institutions. The cooperation programmes include the training of personnel of both institutions, the staging of seminars, workshops and symposiums, and the carrying out of research projects of common interest. These activities will be supported by a special endowment from a prominent local businessman, Mr. Lee Wing Tat. Translation Research Cooperation with Nankai University A research cooperation agreement between the Research Centres for Translation of Nankai University in China and of this University was formally signed on 8th January, 1986 when Dr. J. Minford, Centre Director of this University, visited Nankai University. Under this agreement , the two Centres will cooperate in publishing Chinese translations of a series of important contemporary works on social science, and in compiling an Index of Translation. This University will also assist Nankai University in publishing an English social science journal and in purchasing books and computer equipment. Besides, there will be an exchange of personnel to strengthen the cooperation. These cooperative programmes have been made possible through the financial support by the Trustees of Lingnan University, which provides an initial sum of US$30,000 in 1986. Kan Tong'Po Visiting Professor A Kan Tong-Po Visiting Professorship has been established by the Royal Society with funds donated by the family of the late Mr. Kan Tong-Po. Through this professorship programme, the Royal Society supports visits of prominent scientists to the two local Universities to help promote teaching and research in specific fields.
