News i n Br i ef Planning Committee on Biotechnology A Planning Committee on Biotechnology has been appointed by the Vice-Chancellor. The membership of the Committee is as follows: Chairman Dr. Walter K.K. Ho, Senior Lecturer, Department of Biochemistry Members Professor S.T. Chang, Chairman, Department of Biology (Ex-officio) Professor C.Y. Lee, Chairman, Department of Biochemistry (Ex-officio) Dr. K.K. Mark, Senior Lecturer, Department of Biology Mr. A.E. Starling, Planning Officer, Faculty of Medicine Secretary Dr. Chan Kwong Yu, Senior Lecturer, Department of Biology The appointments are for a term of two years. The terms of reference of the Committee are: (i) to coordinate research in Biotechnology; (ii) to make proposals for setting up postgraduate programmes in Biotechnology; and (iii) to be responsible to the Departments of Biochemistry and Biology. UPGCAcademic Review Visit The University and Polytechnic Grants Committee (UPGC) met in Hong Kong in January 1986 and made academic review visits to the two Universities. The Committee visited this University on 8th and 9th January to discuss with staff and students issues concerning development in engineering studies, undergraduate and postgraduate studies, research, teacher training, part-time degree programmes, student affairs, and library. The Committee also visited the Prince of Wales Hospital on 10th and held discussion sessions with members of the Faculty of Medicine. Professor G.H. ChoaAppointed UPGCMember Professor G.H. Choa, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Pro-Vice-Chancellor, has been appointed by His Excellency the Governor a member of the University and Polytechnic Grants Committee for a period of three years, beginning 1st January, 1986. Following this appointment, Professor Choa has been appointed by the UPGC Chairman a member of the UPGC Medical Sub-Committee. Professor Choa is one of the two local academics ever appointed to the UPGC. New Advisers to Chinese University Bulletin Professor D.C. Lau and Professor Yeung Yue-man have been appointed by the Vice-Chancellor as members of the Advisory Committee on Chinese University Bulletin for a term of two years with effect from 1st January, 1986. The Committee is to advise on the policy of the Bulletin and supervise its publication. The composition of the Committee is as follows: Convener Dr. F.C. Chen, University Secretary Members Professor D.C. Lau Professor S.W. Tam Professor Yeung Yue-man Secretary Mrs. Y.L.C. Foo, Editor of the Chinese University Bulletin Members of the Committee are appointed in their personal capacity. University Members Serve on Outside Committees (1) The following members of the University have been appointed/reappointed by His Excellency the Governor to serve on various boards and councils: * Professor S.P.B. Donnan, Professor of Community Medicine, appointed as a member of the Pneumoconiosis Compensation Fund Board from 1st January, 1986 to 31st December, 1987. * Professor David Gwilt, Professor of Music, and Dr. Richard Ho, Lecturer in Chinese, reappointed as members of the Council for the Performing Arts from 1st January to 31st March, 1986. * Professor S.T. Chang, Professor of Biology, appointed as a member of the Marketing Advisory Board for a period of one year effective 1st January, 1986. * Mr. S.C. Lin and Dr. David Faure, Senior Lecturer and Lecturer in History, appointed as members of the Antiquities Advisory Board for a period of one year effective 1st January, 1986. * Professor J.E. Gardiner, Professor of Pharmacology, appointed as a member of the Council of the City Polytechnic from 1st January, 1986 to 31st December, 1988.
