News in Brief 29 Hi-Tech Products Developed by CUHK Win Hong Kong Awards for Industries A Bluetooth system module, a photo-editing software for mobile phones, and an advanced Sense-and-Respond ® supply chainmanagement systemdeveloped by teachers and students of CUHK have received the Hong Kong Awards for Industries 2005. The Hong KongAwards for Industries was officially incepted in 2005. It aims to recognize the outstanding achievements of Hong Kong enterprises in their move towards higher technology and higher value-added activities. The Hon. Donald Tsang, Chief Executive of the HKSAR, officiated at this year’s award presentation which was held on 27 February 2006. The world’s smallest compact LTCC Bluetooth System Module developed by Prof. Wu Keli of the Department of Electronic Engineering and his team won the Consumer Product Design Certificate of Merit. This integrated module is based on the Low Temperature Co- fired Ceramic (LTCC) technology and is less than half the size of commercial modules available in the market. It can be applied to any Bluetooth-enabled consumer wireless products including mobile phone headset, laptop computer, MP3 players and digital cameras. A company in Hong Kong Science Park plans to produce the Bluetooth systemmodule, while a well-known Hong Kong producer will make headsets with it. Zenesis Limited, founded by Jason Ho and Picco Chu, graduates of the Department of Information Engineering, received the Technological Achievement Award for its development of the world’s first photo-editing software for mobile phones. Taking up little memory, it can be applied to different operating systems such as mobile phones, digital cameras and personal computers. It is the first automatic digital photo- editing software in the world that can be applied to mobile phones. It is now used by many companies. e-Jing Technologies Limited, a spin-off company of the University, was awarded the Technological Achievement Certificate ofMerit. The innovative technology, the Sense-and- Respond ® , has already been implemented by Forbes Global 1000 companies and various enterprises in Greater China. The Supply Chain Management System which includes features such as Lead-time Optimizer, Dynamic Pegging, Alternative Part Handler, Demand Source Adaptor, and Capacity Collaborator, was developed by Prof. Houmin Yan and Prof. David Yao of the Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management. The Sense- and-Respond ® SupplyChainManagement systemhas beenassistingOEM&ODMmanufacturers in achieving high production efficiency and on-demand adaptive manufacturing.
