The New School of Law 19 The school is also committed to serving the community to which it sees itself as being accountable. One way in which the school does that is by making it a mandatory requirement for all students to take a compulsory course entitled ‘The Individual, the Community, and the Law’. Students of that course are required to go into the community to conduct in-depth research on at least one core issue faced by the community and the role the law plays in that issue. The issues examined can include migrant workers, the environment, domestic violence, protection of the harbour, the rights of children, and prisoners’ rights. In the years to come, the school will sponsor a variety of programmes, centres and workshops to provide more outlets for the theoretical and empirical work of both academic staff and students.
