40 Chinese University Bulletin Spring • Summer 2006 Exhibitions Art Museum Exhibitions Shanghai Artists : The Yu Garden Collection ‘Shanghai Artists : The Yu Garden Collection’ ran from 22 April to 2 June 2006 at the East-wing Galleries. The Yu Garden, located in the Southeast of Shanghai City, is a classical Chinese garden of the South. The construction of the garden took place in the Jiajing reign (1522–1566) of the Ming dynasty. Since then it had become the birthplace of the Shanghai Painting School and a meeting place for painters, calligraphers and epigraphists. The Management Office of the Yu Garden has acquired more than a thousand pieces of painting and calligraphy by renowned Qing to modern Shanghai artists over years. Fifty pieces have been selected for this exhibition, including 30 paintings and 20 works of calligraphy. Among the distinctive paintings are landscapes by Feng Chaoran, Huang Shanshou, Wu Qinmu, Pu Hua and Wu Qingyun; bird-and-flower paintings by Ren Yi, Zhao Yunhe, Wang Yachen and Zhang Dazhuan; and portraits by Feng Zikai, Qian Huian and Wang Zhen. In calligraphy, equally significant works are shown, including seal script by Huang Binhong and Tong Danian; clerical script by Zeng Xi and Ma Gongyu; regular script by Pan Boying; running script by He Shaoji, Shen Yunmo and Wu Hufan; and also cursive script by Xie Zhiliu. The exhibition is organized with an aim to feature eminent Shanghai artists and their unique styles of the late Qing to modern periods so as to enhance cultural exchange between Hong Kong and Shanghai. The Art of the Chinese Potter: Selections from the Art Museum Collection Exhibition on ‘The Art of the Chinese Potter: Selections from the Art Museum Collection’ is held from 15 June to 29 October. Chinese ceramics has a long history of production, spanning from the Neolithic period to the present. The different functions of ceramics include sacrificial ceremony, burial, architecture, trade, decorative display, aesthetic appreciation and collection. Ceramics is so closely related to society that its content is extraordinary rich. The Art Museum is proud to have a comprehensive collection on ceramics, thanks to the generous contributions of the B.Y. Lam Foundation, the Zande Lou, the Bei Shan Tang, the Taoshi Zhai, the Friends of the Art Museum, Dr. Simon Kwan, Mr. Anthony Chung, and Prof. and Mrs. Cheng Te-kun. In celebration of its 35th anniversary, the Art Museum presents this exhibition that highlights the artistic attainment of the Chinese potter and pays tribute to the donors for their support over the years.
