News in Brief 33 12 CUHK Mathematics Graduates Receive Full Scholarships to Further Studies at Top Overseas Universities CUHK Commends Young Researchers T welve undergraduate and graduate students of The Chinese University have received full fellowships/studentships from top universities in North America and Europe to further their studies. The institutions include Stanford University, Princeton University, U.C. Berkeley, University of Chicago, the University of British Columbia and Tinbergen Institute in Netherlands. Prof. Yau Shing- tung, Fields Medalist and distinguished professor-at-large of the University, attended the celebration held by the Department of Mathematics on 29 May. ‘It really is a feat. Tuition and living expenses for a year of study in theUS amount to about USD50,000. Even for well-off institutions such as Harvard, full scholarships are a financial burden. The competition is extremely keen for students within the US, not to mention overseas students. Clearly, CUHK has the capability to produce world- class mathematics graduates and iswell positioned to compete with the best universities,’ said Prof. Yau. The ‘YoungResearcher Award’ and the ‘Award for the Best Research Output by Research Postgraduate Students’ have been established to further promote research development and nurture the next generation of research talents. These annual awards recognize academic staff under 40 and postgraduate students with exemplary researchachievements, encouragingoriginality and innovation as they strive to create new knowledge and contribute to society. RecipientsoftheYoungResearcherAward 2005 are Prof. Tsang Hon Ki (Department of Electronic Engineering), Prof. Rossa Chiu Wai Kwun (Department of Chemical Pathology), Prof. Dennis Ng Kee Pui (Department of Chemistry), and Prof. Wong Kam Chau (Department of Economics). Recipients of the Award for the Best Research Output by Research Postgraduate Students 2005 are Mr. Yang Xiang Yin (Department of History), Mr. Joe Wenjie Jiang (Department of Computer Science and Engineering), Dr. Petti Pang (Department of Physiology), Mr. Deng Liang (Department of Chemistry), and Miss Chow Wing Yin (Department of Psychology). Prof. Lawrence J. Lau, Vice-Chancellor, presided at the prize presentation ceremony on 8 May 2006.
