News in Brief 43 Lectures Wei Lun Lectures Prof. Mona Baker, professor of translation studies at the University of Manchester, delivered a lecture entitled ‘Framing Narratives in Translation’ on 24 March 2006. Prof. Jenefer Blackwell, Glaxo Professor for Molecular Parasitology of the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research, University of Cambridge School of Clinical Medicine, spoke on ‘Genetic and Infectious Diseases: Candidate Genes and Genome Scans’ on 27 April 2006. Other Lectures The Department of History and Asia- Pacific Institute of Business of the CUHK, and Hong Kong Public Libraries of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department jointly organized the Public Lectures on History and Business in China 2005–06 in January 2006. The lectures were sponsored by the Lee Hysan Foundation. Mr. Takanori Kitamura, consul-general of Japan in Hong Kong, spoke on ‘Japan’s Diplomacy: Consistency and Evolution’ on 18 January. Dr. Volker Stanzel, ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to China, delivered a lecture entitled ‘Global Challenges Need Global Answers: Tasks for Germany, Tasks for China’ on 1 March 2006. The Faculty of Business Administration organized the Distinguished Speakers’ • • • • • • Series to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the MBA Programmes. Dr. David Li Kwok-po, chairman and chief executive of the Bank of East Asia, Dr. Vincent Cheng, chairman of HSBC, and Dr. Joseph Yam Chi-kwong, chief executive of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority were invited to host lectures on 15 March, and 6 and 20 April respectively. Prof. Wu Jinglian, senior research fellow at the Development Research Centre of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China, delivered a lecture titled ‘Transformation of the Growth Pattern and China’s Industrialization’ on 16 March. Prof. Max Boisot, adjunct professor at INSEAD, Fontainebleau, France, and associate fellow at Templeton College, University of Oxford, delivered a lecture on ‘China and the Globalization Process: Alternative Interpretations’ on 6 April 2006. The event was sponsored by the Li Ka Shing Foundation Exchange Programme. Mr. Raymond Burghardt, director of the Seminars Program, East-West Center in Hawaii, and retired US Ambassador to Vietnam, gave a lecture on ‘US-Asia Relations, Focusing on China’ on 19 April. Sir Muir Gray, director of the National Electronic Library for Health and director of clinical knowledge, process and safety for the National Programme for IT in the UK, spoke on ‘How to Get Better Value Healthcare?’ on 18 April. • • • • Obituary T he University records with deep sadness the passing of Prof. John Espy on 24 April in Kansas City, USA, at the age of 84. Prof. Espy first joined Chung Chi College in the early 1960s as a lecturer in chemistry and was bursar of the College. He was later admitted to Harvard Business School in the US where he obtained his doctorate in 1970. He then returned to the Chinese University and played an active role in the establishment of the University’s MBA Programmes. He was the associate director of the Programmes until his retirement in 1988. Well liked by his colleagues and students, Prof. Espy had made distinguished contributions to the development of the Programmes as well as the University in general. He was awarded the title of Emeritus Professor of International Business in 1989.
