News in Brief 25 Sun Hung Kai Properties Nobel Laureates Distinguished Lectures J ointly organized by The Chinese UniversityandSunHungKaiProperties (SHKP), the Sun Hung Kai Properties Nobel Laureates Distinguished Lectures were held in February and May 2006. On 15 February, Prof. Myron S. Scholes, 1997 Nobel Laureate in Economic Sciences, spoke on ‘Financial Innovation: Enhancing Prosperity’, at the lecture theatre of Shaw College. Prof. Scholes iswidely known for his seminal work on options pricing, capital markets, tax policies and the financial services industry. He co-developed the Black-Scholes options pricing model, which is the basis of pricing and risk- managementtechnologyusedaroundthe world to evaluate financial instruments. On 22 and 23 May, four Nobel laureates gathered in the grand ballroom of the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong and shared their insight with an audience of a thousand. The four distinguished speakers are: Prof. Robert J. Aumann — 2005 laureate in economic sciences and • expert in analyzing conflict and cooperation using game theory, on ‘War and Peace’. Prof. Robert A. Mundell — 1999 laureate in economic sciences, also known as ‘Father of the Euro’ for his work on currencies and monetary policy, on ‘Chinese Macroeconomic Strategies and the International Monetary System’. Prof. Samuel C.C. Ting — 1976 laureate in physics and discoverer of the J-particle, on ‘Encounters with Modern Physics’. Prof. Kurt Wührich — 2002 laureate in chemistry for having developed magnetic resonance spectroscopy to analyze the structure of macromolecules, on ‘Structural Biology and Structural Genomics — an Interdisciplinary Field for Physicists, Chemists and Biologists’. Dr. Raymond P.L. Kwok, Vice- Chairman and Managing Director of SHKP and Prof. Lawrence J. Lau, Vice-Chancellor of CUHK officiated at the opening ceremony. For the first time, the lectures including the opening ceremony were broadcast live at Peking University in Beijing which enabled teachers and students on the mainland to enjoy the inspiration and charisma of the Nobel laureates. • • • Prof. Myron S.
