Library orientation sessions are organized for new students at the beginning of each academic year. Workshops on the use of different library resources are held from time to time. Information guides are available at the Library Homepage (website: http://www.lib.cuhk.edu.hk ). Library Newsletters are also distributed to users via e-mails. Universities Service Centre The Universities Service Centre provides a comprehensive, user-friendly collection of original source materials on contemporary China for scholars all over the world. The centre’s library on post-1949 China is incomparable in its coverage: complete runs from the early 1950s up to the present of most of China’s provincial and national newspapers; a collection of provincial yearbooks; many hundreds of county gazetteers; and a judiciously chosen collection of the most valuable books available on the mainland, many of which are unavailable elsewhere in the world. Currently the centre subscribes to 2,000 journals and magazines in Chinese and over 80 in English, and to more than 400 Chinese newspapers. The Universities Service Centre is committed to serving scholars in contemporary China studies everywhere. Overseas researchers at or above the graduate level are eligible to use the centre free of charge. Faculty of local tertiary institutions as well as local students enrolled in China-related courses can also have access to its collection. The centre also organizes luncheon seminars on China studies. The Chinese University Press The University started its publishing activities in 1967. After a decade of experience in this field, the University established The Chinese University Press in 1977. Over 900 titles in English or Chinese have since been published, covering various subjects, but mostly Chinese culture and China studies. These publications are widely distributed in Asia, North America, Europe, and Australia. Since 1988 the Press has also published general books in addition to academic publications. Last year the Press published over 40 academic and general titles, including books in special series such as the Hong Kong Centre for Economic Research Series, and the Institute of Chinese Studies Series. In addition, the Press published and distributed nine academic journals. In April 1991, the Press began producing audio and video tapes on educational and commercial subjects, including language skills, management for business executives, and clinical education in various medical disciplines. To date, over 80 audio-visual programmes have been published. The Press also produces audio-visual programmes for other organizations on a contract basis.
