Gifts and Donations The University has recently received from local and overseas individuals and foundations the following gifts and donations in support of its programmes and projects: (1) From Banca Popolare di Bergamo ITL6,300,000 to provide three scholarships for students studying Itialian to attend a summer course at the Instituto Universitario di Bergamo in 1995. (2) From Biochemistry Alumni Association, CUHK, HK$2,000 to provide a scholarship for a biochemistry student in 1994-95. (3) From Emerson Electric Asia-Pacific to provide annually a full-tuition scholarship for a first-year student of the full-time MBA Programme with a first degree in engineering. (4) From Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fund Council: (a) HK$245,000 annually to provide seven fellowships of $35,000 each for postgraduate research students; and (b) HK$440,000 annually to provide 22 scholarships of $20,000 each for undergraduate students. (5) From Sir Quo-wei Lee HK$36,000 annually to provide three half-tuition bursaries for needy students of Shaw College. (6) FromMachiavelli Centro di Lingua e Cultura Italiana per Stranieri ITL8,250,000 to provide 25 awards of ITL330,000 each for students studying Italian to attend a summer course on its premises in Florence in 1995. (7) From Universita Cattolica del Sacro Cuore ITL16,800,000 to provide 12 awards of ITL1,400,000 each for students studying Italian to attend an international workshop on its premises in the summer of 1995. (8) From Universita per Stranieri at Perugia ITL800,000 to provide an award for a student studying Italian to attend a summer course at the Italian University for Foreigners in Perugia in 1995. (9) From Thomas H.C. Cheung Foundation Ltd.: (a) HK$50,000 for the publication of Reach jointly undertaken by the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Engineering; (b) HK$100,000 for the improvement of the United College campus; and (c) HK$42,000 to sponsor Dr. Tso Wung-wai of the Department of Biochemistry to attend the UFO Delegation in Europe organized by The Citizen and Ambassador Programme (USA) in March- April 1995. (10) From Mr. Chu K.S. Victor HK$10,000 to the Department of Architecture for the publication of students' newsletters. (11) From the following donors to the Gender Research Programme of the Hong Kong Institute of Asia- Pacific Studies to support the publication of the newsletter Gender Studies: News and Views: (a) Maxine T. Davie HK$800; and (b) Ms. Susanna Hoe HK$100. (12) From Wu Jieh Yee Charitable Foundation Limited HK$50,000 for the publication of the book ‘粤音教學紀事’ edited by Dr. Richard M.W. Ho under the auspices of the Ng Tor-tai Chinese Language Research Centre of the Institute of Chinese Studies. (13) From the following donors towards the Convocation Research Programme Fund: (a) A Better Tomorrow Ltd. HK$50,000; (b) Mr. Law Cheung-kwok HK$20,000; and (c) Lucky Bridge Ltd. HK$50,000. (14) From Bayer China Co. Ltd. to the Department of Medicine: (a) HK$70,000 to support a clinical trial jointly undertaken with the Department of Clinical Pharmacology; (b) HK$65,500 to support a clinical trial; and (c) HK$25,000 to sponsor staff members to attend the 1995 Combined Conference of the Renal Society of Australasia and the Australian and New Zealand Society of Nephrology held in Canberra, Australia, in March 1995. (15) From Boehringer Ingelheim (HK) Limited to the Department of Medicine: (a) HK$25,000 to support the research project on accelerated re-PA trial in the Chinese in Hong Kong; and (b) HK$30,000 to support The Second International Symposium on Myocardial Infarction held in March 1995. (16) From Bristol-Myers Squibb (HK) Limited: (a) HK$72,000 to support a study undertaken by the Department of Surgery; and (b) HK$5,000 to support the honorary clinical tutors meeting of the Department of Community and Family Medicine held in December 1994. (17) From Burroughs Wellcome and Co.(HK): (a) HK$50,000 to support epileptic research and related activities undertaken by the Department of Medicine; and (b) HK$20,000 to sponsor a staff member of the Department of Paediatrics to attend The 67th Annual Scientific Meeting of the British Paediatric Association held in the UK in March 1995.
