Profiles Dr. Wang Penglin Lecturer in Anthropology Dr. Wang completed his undergraduate studies in Russian at the Be i j i ng Foreign Studies University in 1977, after which he wo r k ed as a translator in the Chinese Research Institute of Space Technology. Dr. Wang then pursued his postgraduate studies in field methodology and theory in linguistic anthropology at the graduate school of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, where he developed a special interest in minority nationalities in northern China. After receiving his M A degree in 1981, Dr. Wang served as a research associate at the Institute of Nationality Studies in Beijing for six years before embarking on his doctoral programme in linguistics at the University of Hawaii with the financial support of the East-West Center. He received his Ph.D. in 1993. Dr. Wang has done extensive fieldwork in Chinese minority regions to investigate how ethnic minorities use their dialects and how Chinese is learnt and used in such societies. He has participated in cultural studies projects in the Asia-Pacific region, including the East- West Center's Chinese Cultural Identity Project and Chinese Childhood Socialization Project. In recent years Dr. Wang has directed his research interests towards cognitive anthropology, focussing on topics such as religious terminology, ethnonyms, and toponyms. Dr. Wang has published over 20 papers in Chinese and international journals. Dr. L iu Yun-hui Lecturer in Mechanical & Automation Engineering Dr. L iu received his BE degree in applied dynamics from the Beijing Engineering Institute (now Beijing Polytechnical University) in 1985, his M E degree in mechanical engineering from Osaka University i n 1989, and his Ph.D. in mathematical engineering and information physics from the University of Tokyo in 1992. Dr. L iu is interested in robotic control, robotic motion planning and machine intelligence, and has vast experience in both theoretical and experimental work in robotics. Prior to joining The Chinese University, Dr. L iu worked for three years as a research scientist at the Electrotechnical Laboratory o f the M i n i s t ry o f International Trade and Industry in Japan, and was an investigator on several Japanese national projects on robotics. Besides having over 10 papers published in international journals, Dr. L iu is also the recipient of the 1994 Best Paper Award of the Journal of the Robotics Society of Japan. Dr. L iu has served on the editorial board o f such professional bodies as the Society of Instrument and Control Engineers of Japan, as well as on the programme committees of several IEEE international conferences in his area of expertise. Dr. Georgia S. Guldan Lecturer in Biochemistry Dr. Guldan received her B.Sc. degree in zoology f r om the University of Wisconsin, and an M.Sc. and Ph.D. in nutrition from Tufts University in 1985 and 1988 respectively. Her doctoral research investigated maternal education, c h i ld feeding, and household hygiene practices in rural Bangladesh. Before joining this university, Dr. Guldan worked for 18 years in developing countries in Asia, the most recent being five and a half years o f teaching and conducting nutrition research at the West China University of Medical Sciences in Chengdu, Sichuan. Dr. Liu's research and teaching interests include nutrition promotion and education strategies, nutrition policy, rural children's growth faltering, and elderly osteoporosis and hip fractures. She is currently conducting nutrition interventions in Hong Kong and China, and is actively involved in the nutrition work of various local organizations. She has authored and coauthored about 30 articles and conference publications in Chinese and international journals, as well as several articles in other publications. She has also published a nutrition guidebook for parents in China. Dr. Guldan, in addition to promoting nutrition, enjoys badminton, cycling, and learning languages. Mr. Paschal P.M.
